I know this subject has come up before, but I haven't seen anything recently, and things do tend to change down there. What do you guys recommend for a day of car rental in late April, and who are your preferred operators? Any tips or advice? I seem to recall a lot of people complaining about the car rental scene in Cozumel, so I thought I would get an update. Thanks for your help-you guys are the best! Woody

Avis at the airport has great rates and Service. We booked on line.
Have fun!

We rented from Avis using the company website. We were staying at the Fiesta Americana and they have an on-site presence there. No hassles at all. We got a jeep for the price of the little car because they were out of the little cars. One thing they don't tell you is that the shift linkage for the 4X4 transfer case is almost always disconnected on the jeeps so you will not be able to shift into 4 wheel drive. You have to ask for a jeep that has the 4 wheel drive working if you want that. I found out the hard way, I got stuck in the sand :(

You can also rent Avis cars thru www.cozumelinsider.com as well as get other car rental info there.

Last trip, I just got the phone book and looked up car rental places in the yellow pages. I called around and asked for prices, and I always asked, "Is that your best price?" Most came down 20-30% just for asking. It was the low season, and they were hungry. The agency I went with picked me up at the hotel ten minutes after the call. Piece of cake.

We went through Avis for our car rental. Like the others we booked in advance online.
We arrived at the airport and were helped to our rental car. Have fun.

I think it depends on if you are renting for 1 day or for a week or two. If you're renting long term, I'd say shop around. If you're renting for just 1 day to do the "east side thing", as we usually do, the most convenient way is to rent from the resort's on-site car rental. It's probably a little more expensive (well, it's definitely more expensive) but for just one day...very convenient.

I just got back a couple weeks ago and had reseved a car through Hertz. I was to pick it up at their location near the ferry when I arrived. When I showed up at the agreed upon time, the office was closed.

I waited around for 20 or 30 minutes and finally gave up and rented one on the spot from the place next door. I can't remember what it was called - paradise rentals or something. I haggled them down to 30/day for a decent car - the same deal I would have gotten from Hertz.

Another person in my group had the same problem with the Hertz guys and ended up renting from Avis. Not sure why they're never open.

Bottom line is, if you're coming in by ferry, there seemed to be no shortage of rental cars and rental car companies, so you can probably just pick one up on the spot. I would definitely haggle on the price (they wanted 75/day initially for my car) and have a look at the car before you pay (they tried to pawn a real piece of junk off on me at first).

We rent through LessPay. They are competitive and the cars are usually in pretty good shape. Look at the car before you commit.
