Trip report for anyone interested in tips in Coz.
Trip length: 4 nights in Coz, 4 nights in Tulum.
Transportation: We flew into Cancun (nonstop from Washington DC). Took the bus to Playa Del Carmen (about 1 hour?) and then the ferry from Playa to Coz (about 45 mins?). Then a cab to the hotel (5 mins, $5). On the return, we took the ferry to Playa, then a bus to Tulum (about 1 hour?). After a few days, caught a ride up to Cancun and flew nonstop back home.
Dove with Deep Blue for 4 days. Fantastic dive op - highly recommended. My boyfriend completed his Open Water course with Luis the instructor. Luis was an amazing instructor - very knowledgable, friendly, and has extensive experience. The training was 1:1 - very personalized to the individual.
Deep Blue uses smaller boats and keeps the number of passengers to a minimum. No cattle boats. Typically 2-4 clients per Dive Master. They took us on a different location for each dive over the 4 days. Very safe, friendly, and informative dive masters and capitans. Had a great time with them.
Deep Blue picked us up/dropped off every day from our hotel's pier - which was fantastically convenient!
The diving was amazing - saw a large nurse shark on each of our first 3 dives. Spotted eagle ray (beautiful flying!), stingrays, barracuda, large green eels, scorpionfish, georgous coral, reef, and walls. Great night dive with large crabs, lobster, octupuses (i?). Fantastic visibility - warm water (80 F) - all drift dives.
We stayed at the el Presidente Inter-continental. It was a nice hotel - lovely large swimming pool. Open-air style throughout - ala Hawaii. Sand/beach areas with plenty comfy lounge chairs and beach-side service for drinks/food. Two separate marked snorkel spots right in front of the hotel were fantastic. One had small sunken ship with lovely large fish. Saw baracuda, flounder, small ray, scorpionfish, and many pretty fishies.
The Hotel Room was large - we upgraded to an oceanview with a balcony (in the taller building - 5th floor). Very clean and great maid service. Large balcony w/ chairs was great for relaxing on every morning, and laying out the equipment to dry. Included a large bottle of water every day. The bathrpom was an odd configuration though - open to the room with separate doors to the toilet and shower. The doors were funky - glass with a 2-inch open border around - so there was very little privacy in using the comode...
Hotel Food: The hotel had two restaurants: Alfredo's and an open-air beach-side place. We did not eat at Alfredo's - but dined at the open-air place many times. Good food and drinks - but pricey.
Hotel was a $5 cab ride into town (each way). We went into town a couple times for food and to explore. There is nothing near the hotel within walking distance.
We followed the recommendations of some locals and Christi from this forum. (Thanks Christi - your recommendations were fantastic!). We ate at:
- La Choza: large and festive atmosphere w/ mariache band. the shrimp chile relleno was amazing - best I've ever had. good margaritas & tequila shots.
- Camilo's: tiny little gem. the seafood tacos are fantastic - shrimp, marlin, octopus - yum.
- Asadero el Pollo: small, local joint with a couple plastic tables. Really good grilled chicken - comes w/ tortilla's, rice, salsas. and cheap too. Many locals came in for take-out food while we ate - always a good sign!
Have fun!
