Ok guys my 15 yr old daughter did a discover diving session last night in a 8' deep swimming pool at a lds. She did great. She is very comfortable in the water and has been snorkeling all over with us for years. The instructor was so impressed that he had her finish every skill in ow dive 1 with ease. My problem is this. Within a 1/2 hr of getting out of the water she was complaining of bad pain in her ankle. I attributed it to maybe kneeling on the bottom w/fins or such. She is very physically fit and very active btw. I was informed by my wife that she vomitted during the night and right now is still quite nauseous. There were no incidents in the pool, no swallowed water or fast ascents. This couldn't possibly be diving related could it?? At 8'?? I have to say they were breathing off the regs for almost an hour. Is it remotely possible or even likely??

Wow, I think I would call the Divers Alert Network (DAN) and see what they think.

Not a doctor, nor do I play one outside the privacy of my own home.. but I would look elsewhere first.. 8' even with repeated fast ascents should never really be an issue.

If she is the only one of the group ill then rule out bad air .. some people do have bad reactions to pool chemicals (the non -chlorine one ..borax? gives me a headache and makes me a little nauseous) . But I would think flu first then think about what she ate in the last 24 hours..

#1. Call DAN. 1-919-684-8111 This should be the absolute first thing to do anytime a dive injury is suspected. They are the experts and handle questions like yours all day long.
#2. There's a stomach bug going around the schools here in Raleigh. Maybe it's there, too.
#3. An hour of finning in rental fins would likely make any newbie's ankle sore, no matter how physically fit they are for surface activities.

Don't forget to call DAN. <g> I hope everything turns out to be just fine and that your daughter continues to dive.

Thank you very much for your concern and reply! I just got off the phone with Dan and they said that it is highly unlikely that the pain in the ankle would be from bubbles and pretty much said that it was probably exactly what you said. The nausea they said could be related to an ear equalizing issue which I forgot that she did mention a slightly uncomfortable feeling in her ears.Any way I'm going to get her to our doctor for a quick look. Again thank you to all who that replied!:D

Don't forget about nerves. Even the bravest of us have some anxiety when trying something new and dangerous. After my discover class I felt like crap for a couple of days.

Anything is possible Del but if she was nervous she sure hid it well ! She's doing much better now and even went in to school.
