I just got off the phone with a diving buddy in Vietnam......Here is the latest info!
The COTS love freshly broken coral or dying coral that is baited/covered with green algae. The boys over there tried putting a bunch of coral in a bamboo fish trap (one meter by one meter). Voila! In one day (overnight) they collected 25 COTS in a largely infested area. Over a period of 5 days they captured 80 COTS. The trap has a float tied to the surface. The trap was pulled to the surface via the buoy and rope. The guys there are drying the COTS on a piece of plywood and then taking the dried COTS and putting them in there flower garden of the resort. At first it seems weird but the COTS add protection (from animals crawling through the flower garden) and create a beautiful garden within the plants. Well, there it is.....sounds like it is worth a try.

what about the smell/stink of the desintegrating COTs?

it is has a nasty stink .

a container that protects the inside from light would also attrack COTs before sunrise.

.

They dried them on the beach. The COTS are nailed to piece of plywood and dried out in the sun. It takes about 2 days to dry them out. Hey, it sounds plausible.....I'm thinking we might give it a shot.

that should work .

the nocturnal nature of the cots should be taken advantaged as well.

hmmmmmmm am thinking if i do a contraption for this weekend however it may trap other nocturnal crawlers as well.....

I asked that very same question about trapping other critters.....not worry if you use a fish trap. The small critters will fall out when you lift it to the surface and you can filter the other out when you open it. It sounds promising. Anything to get rid of the friggin' COTS!!!!

Where will you be harvesting COTs this sunday lolo pao?

Do you have fish basket plans/ideas?
