This seems really simple and stupid question, but I couldn't find the answer.

I'm setting up my new backplate and harness. I have stainless steel weight retainers to keep D-rings in place. Only problem is that I don't know which way to thread webbing trough the retainer.

Retainers middle bar is higher than the side bars. So if retainer is oriented so that middle bar is higher should I thread the webbing under the side bars and over the middle bar (and D-ring) or other way around (over the side bars and under the middle bar)?

You can thread them either way.
One way will be lower profile.
The other way will give more resistance to movement.

I would try the low profile way first and only change if they were slipping.

The first way, under the outside bars and over the middle one, also have the raised side "out", against the D-ring, it will allow it lay better.

Well I did a compromise. Shoulder straps first way (with bent D-rings) and waist strap second way :)
