I fly from Col's Ohio to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida about every month on Southwest Airlines. I always take a pistol with me. At the counter when checking in I tell the person that I have a firearm in one piece of luggage. The person checks that the gun case is locked and that I have the key. Then I fill out a small form which is taped to the gun case. I use TSA combination locks on all my luggage which are locked before going to the TSA line. Then I wheel the luggage to the TSA xray machines. I don't know what happens after that but I have never had any of the checked luggage with a gun in it opened for any reason.

LOL...good idea. I read the article-Air pistols and started pistols count as weapons in this case. At first I was thinking for someone who doesn't normally own a pistol, buying one for 300-500 just to secure your luggage would be a little extreme but an airgun would be reasonable.

A co-worker of mine travels all the time with a fire arm as he is big into hunting. He was saying on a few occasions when he has told the clerk that he has a weapon she has given him the paperwork to carry it on the plane as in on his person. He has had to explaion that he is not law enforcement and needs the 'other' form. Kinda scary.

OldNSalty: I would imagine that your "co-worker" is totally bullsh**'n you about getting permissiion from the counter people to "carry it on the plane as in on his person". An absolute no-no in any form. He wouldn't get two feet through TSA with or without the "other "form before ending up in handcuffs.

No no, he didn't carry it on. He just said he told her he had a gun to declare for transport and she handed him some forms. He looked at the forms and realized that it wasn't what he tpically filled out and was some form for law enforcement. He wasn't about to 'test' the system-besides, he was carrying large rifles. Not something that would easily fit into the overhead :)

OldNSalty: Sorry Dude. Messed up in the translation.

In my CCW course, the teacher told us that it helps him get through lines faster, too. If it's going slow, he'll walk up and tell them "hey, I've got a gun, can you give me the forms to fill out?" and they'll get TSA agents to come help him, so he doesn't have to keep waiting in line.

Traveling with a firearm does have downsides. You need to be very aware of firearm laws at every place you travel. Breaking one could end your right to own a weapon. Additionally, if something does happen to your luggage, you'd better report the weapon stolen ASAP, and give them serial numbers. Nothing ruins fun like getting arrested for a murder committed with your stolen gun.

FAR 135.119 Prohibition against carriage of weapons. No person may, while on board an aircraft being operated by a cirtificate holder, carry on or about that person a deadly or dangerous weapon, either consealed or not. This section does not apply to--(a) Officials or employees of a municipality or a state, or of the United States, who are authorized to carry arms; or (b) Crew members and other persons authorized by the cirtificate holder to carry arms. (FAR/AIM 08)

This isn't regarding bringing a weapon as a carry-on. It's about preventing anyone from messing with your checked-in luggage by keeping a starter pistol with it.

Ohh.. My bad.. So kinda just the idea of sticking a gun in your checked bag to make TSA think not to mess with your stuff?
