I am new to the diving scene and only have a few dives under my belt. I have a question regarding mounting my console. I notice that in my scuba training they teach you with the console mounted on the left and your octo on the right. I also noticed that just about every diver I have seen has this very same setup. After a few dives it seemed logical to me that it would be easier to have my console on the right, specifically so once I am approching my 5m safety stop I can control my ascent with my BC control in my left hand and my console in my right hand to monitor depth. I was curious why this is not more common place. I did swap my console to the right side of my reg and will be diving it this weekend in this configuration. Just a newb question, I did try a search but didnt turn up with anything.

Depending on your unit you could be reading it up side down if mounted from the left.

It's all in what you prefer.

I think it's kind of like the idea of a right hand release with the weight belt. There is nothing that says you can't do a left hand release. It's just a standard and if you need help a buddy is going to look for a right hand release. I dive off of dive boats that set a hang line so I know when I'm at 15 ft. But whatever works for you. If it helps to have your console on the right then put it there. You may want to think about a wrist mount for your dive computer so you won't have to hold the console...Just a suggestion....

If you clip your console off to a chest d-ring you'll both avoid the risk of the dangly damaging anything and be able to read it without holding it leaving both hands free.

You don't mention if you invested in a computer yet.
The tendency (although not universal) is to have an electronic depth gauge on your wrist and the analog gauge becomes a backup anyway.

Yes I do have a console mounted Computer. I may look into getting a wrist mounted depth guage. Thanks for the replys.

I have my computer wristmounted on the right wrist for the reasons you mentioned...

I have mine on the right hand side as well. This way I can control my low pressure inflator with one hand, as I monitor my depth with the other. I think it would be tough doing both with one hand.

I would worry about having the console on the right for one reason. You dro your regulator, swing your arm around to grab it, and somehow grab your console instead.

If you do it the other way you will DIE!

Not really. I am left handed and try reconfiguring almost everything I do backwards to see if it works better for me. One of my first stages has a turret and two HP outlets. It is easy to configure with my SPG on my right hip instead of my left. The other first stage is older and only has one HP outlet. It is much more difficult to make all the hose routing work. I set them both up to work in the same way so I would always have the same configuration, that is with the SPG in the left hip d-ring. I feel like such a conformist...
