Connecting fiber optic sync to Canon WP-DC28

I'm (still) struggling to make a reliable connection between the fiber cable that connects my S&S YS-D2 and the WP-DC28.

I'm certain this problem is present for most (all?) of the Canon WP enclosures and someone must have come up with a creative solution.

Suggestions are most appreciated.
