As the world knows, on September 2, 2019, the 75-foot commercial dive boat, Conception, owned by Truth Aquatics of Santa Barbara, burned and sank at Platt's Harbor, Santa Cruz Island, California. Thirty-three passengers and one crew woman died in this largest maritime tragedy in Channel Islands history. The Santa Cruz Island Foundation (SCIF) has two projects in the works related to the Conception. We invite anyone interested — dive clubs, shops and individuals — to participate in the garden and monument.

Conception Anniversary Trip:
To mark the one-year-anniversary of the tragedy, SCIF is organizing a Labor Day weekend trip to Platt's Harbor, Santa Cruz Island for family members and friends who lost loved ones in the tragedy. Most have not been able to visit the site. With advanced planning, we have booked a large block of hotel rooms at the Holiday Inn at Ventura Harbor over Labor Day weekend 2020. We are close to having the weekend fully funded so that family members will incur no costs thanks to generous grants from Island Packers, California Strong and the Ventura County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team 2.

Conception-34 Monument:
SCIF has designed a large granite monument to memorialize those 34 divers who lost their lives aboard the Conception. With extraordinary cooperation from the NTSB, Department of Justice and FBI, SCIF is receiving one of the 42-inch 4-bladed bronze propellers from the hull of the vessel to be surmounted on the monument. The coarse-grained granite, reminiscent of sand, is being shipped from the state of Tamil Nadi, India. The monument will be placed in the Channel Islands Garden of the Chrisman California Islands Center currently under development in Carpinteria, CA—a seaside community with a view to Santa Cruz Island offshore. Over 6,000 feet of asphalt will be removed from the former Bank of America property (recently purchased by SCIF) to make way for the garden and monument.

Your Support
Life and death have always been part of the history of the Channel Islands. The creation story—the start of life for the Island Chumash—began on the Islands thousands of years ago. For the victims of the Conception, life ended as they visited a beautiful island sanctuary and its underwater forests of kelp. We invite you to join us in honoring these divers and their adventuresome spirit—the Island spirit—by creating this monument and garden in lasting memory of the Conception-34.

Additional information about the Conception and its divers can be found on ISLAPEDIA.com, SCIF's online California Islands encyclopedia. All donations made through ISLAPEDIA (donate button) will be directed to the Conception-34 monument and garden:
