What kind of computer is recommened for diving within the limits of Advance Nitrox? My Aeris will not suffice since if you violate no deco diving it turns in to a gauge only.

I am wanting to read up and get smart on the equipment needed for this next level of diving for me.

Thanks for your time

the vr3 is definately a "tec" computer that is capable of all sorts of mixes (not only nitrox but trimix etc.)...
If you only want to use a high % of 02 for deco or as a travel gas you can buy a Suunto Vytec too (you can use nitrox up to 100% and change nitrox gases underwater).

But rember: tec diving always requires careful planning BEFORE diving! therefore a lot of tec divers offen use a bottom timer and a watch only to dive their plan (!).

Hi,

Are you taking the Advanced Nitrox class only or are you taking it with a Decompression class? If you are interested in the Nitrox only then there are lots of computers to choose from. Any computer capable of 2 gasses would most likely serve you well. If you are taking a Decompression class you should probably wait until you have finished the class. I would expect that your Decompression class will use tables for the dives you will do in the class. If this is your path then you will be interested in a computer that probably can deal with three gasses or more. You will also need to make sure that the computer you are interested in is designed for decompression diving, and you will also need to have redundancy. This narrows the field considerably. There are lots of threads already covering the computers that can do this, do a search.

The Suunto computers seem to be quite popular for recreational diving, but most of the people who own them and do "tech" diving switch them to guage mode. This makes it a very expensive bottom timer. Cochran, Dive Rite, and others make computers that are more suited to both recreational and techincal dive profiles. The VR3 looks like a nice computer. There are lots of other choices that I have not even mentioned from other manufacturers. Look both here and at the Deco Stop http://thedecostop.com/ .

Good luck,

Thanks, for the replys. I am looking at taking the DSAT apprentance and eventually the DSAT Tec Deep couse. After posting my question it appears the Nitek3 would be a suitable computer to upgrade my aeris from, that will allow me to use it both rec and as I venture into tec diving.

The Nitek 3 will be fine for Air/Nitrok mixes with Deco. If you ever want to get into Trimix you will need a new computer.

I own a VR3 which is off in the UK somewhere getting an upgrade. The interesting aspect of the VR3 is that you can buy a nitrox only model and pay for a PIN activated upgrade to Trimix at some later time, another one to Closed circuit etc. i.e. it can grow with your diving.

On the down side it is chunky and I find the screen a bit difficult to read but with the new 'big numbers' option I'm getting that might change :-)

I'm a big fan of the Suunto Vytec. It's a great multigas computer, a little conservative from what I've found though, but I still like it. Better safe then sorry. Skip the transmitter though, I've tried it and had some problems. I don't think the transmitters have any place in tech diving anyway...

Scubapro is also coming out with a technical computer that does three gases. My friend got a demo version that he is testing and it seems pretty nice. I don't know when they are releasing it, but it would be a good advanced rec - begining tec computer.
