October's issue of Dive Training, page 14, mentions...

"the demand for commercial divers is already high. There is generally more demand for commercial diving graduates than the number of students the schools around the country can train, and it's been that way for a number of years."

Would any commercial divers care to acknowledge that this is true?

Since Rita and Katrina there has been a shortageof Diver/tenders, that is the reason there has been such an increase in demand. If you went to one of the dive schools and are in reasonable shape you have a good chance at landing a job. I also read the DT story and seeing an increased interest in inspecting bridges I think the call will be a lot higher in the near future.

For those of us in the CD industry as bad as it sounds it does mean job security.

Thought about it myself until I read the age issue. At 39 I figured I wouldn't waste my time. I can only see things getting "better" for the divers.

CD's earn their paychecks.

That we do, and is it all fun? no but sometimes you get those moments when you think I can't believe they pay me for this?!?!? As for age yes 39 is cutting it a little close but I started at 36 and still am having no real issue. Plus with some companies when you get to the point that you can't dive they will give you another position. At least that is what I am seeing right now.

What is the swimming test like? Or any other physical endurance type requirements?

Then you get those times that you can't believe that you are doing it for so little, or at all.
12 more years and I can retire at 51 with 30 years of service. How ever I did hear that the carpenters union has a "diving division". Been thinking about looking into that.

A diving carpenter?
