My fiancee and I have made up my mind to go to Belize for our honeymoon, and I was looking at staying at Roman's Village. Does anyone have any comments good or bad about the resort? Can anyone offer any comments about the diving there, and what to see and what not to see? Thanks ya'll.

I dove in Belize last summer off a cruise ship and had a great time.

I'm guessing that your are talking about "Ramon's Village". I attended a conference on Ambergris Cay in March of 2005. Stayed at the Sunbreeze hotel, next door to Ramon's. Although I didn't see the rooms at Ramon's myself, the general feeling was, "the rooms are nice, but for the price you'd expect more". I think you are paying a little extra for the ambiance. The Sunbreeze was nice, but in reality is only a "hotel room". Not much room for moving around. Great food and pool though. Feel free to PM me if you want any more specifics or info on the lodging research we've done.
I'll be returning again this March, and found the following websites very helpful. On Ambergris cay lodging, http://www.ambergriscaye.com/pages/lodge/lodging.html was very helpful. The message board on the same site was also helpful. http://ambergriscaye.com/message/ultimatebb.php?/ubb/forum/f/4.html
In general we really enjoyed our stay on Ambergris. We spend 10 days diving with Protech. http://www.ambergriscaye.com/protech/ I can strongly promote their shop, as well as Amigo's Del Mar. I preferred Protech for their small groups, great service, and good dive masters. On one day it was only my wife and I diving, and they still took us out. Amigos is also top notch. We dove with them for the long day trips (Blue Hole and Turneffe) as they have a great Pro48 boat for the rougher water. Divemasters are also well trained. All the better dive shops will pick you up from any pier in the San Pedro area for diving.
As far as "what do you see", here's a link to my Belize Photo gallery. With exception for a small album on Loreto Mexico, the rest of the pictures are of diving in Belize

How much are you wanting to spend? What kind of activities do you require after the diving is done?

I've heard that Ramon's is loud and crowded....also on the public beach.

If price isn't too much of an issue, you might consider Turneffe Island Lodge. Superior service and great diving. Search for my trip report I did in August 2005.

Ate at Ramon's once. Ambience was "Americans trying to act tropical". At the end of the meal, the check came and seemed competitive with the other hotels in the area...till we found out they were charging us US dollars.

Food was a bit less than mediocre.

My boyfriend and I are trying to plan a diving trip to Belize in April 2006. We are also looking for advice on where to stay, eat, dive, etc. Ramon's Village looks nice, but, I've heard you pay more for what you actually get. Anyone have any comments about the Blue Tang Inn? Other suggestions?
Lost at Sea-when are you travelling to Belize?

Do you just want to dive, eat, and gloriously veg out? Then you might want to look into a resort on one of the atolls (Turneffe, Glover's, Lighthouse) rather than staying on Ambergris Caye.

If you want to dive and take advantage of Belize's many topside activities as well, then you might want to consider basing yourself from one of the resorts on the Placencia Peninsula, or else spending half your time on a caye/atoll and half your time inland at one of the jungle resorts.

We loved the mainland topside activities -- Mayan ruins, Mayan villages, Monkey River, jaguar preserve, etc. And we thought the diving from Placencia was just as good as the diving from Ambergris Caye. And we much preferred the ambience of Placencia to that of San Pedro town. (Just our opinion, but 3 days on Ambergris Caye was more than enough for us, while a week on the Placencia Peninsula flew by).

Here's a good website for further research:

Happy honeymoon!

I was at Ambergris two years ago. I didn't stay at Ramon's but I dove with them a bunch of times. No way would I want to stay there. The other posters summed up my opinion of it. Large, impersonal, crowded, and mediocre; just like their diving. Better to stay elsewhere and use Ramon's beach chairs.

There are lots of good big and smaller hotels in San Pedro that most people will like. Have a look at http://ambergriscaye.com/pages/lodge/lodging.html for detailed info on most of them. PM me for any queries you can't find answers to.

Our family spent about a month in Belize in 2003 and barely scratched the surface - so much to see and do! Check out www.belizeforum.com
It has a long history and a great search engine. Congratulations and have a great trip!
