After a calm crossing we arrived to the most beautiful island in the world, Cocos Island, ready for our first dive in Chatham Bay. We rolled back into the water and immediately saw a tiger shark! The tiger approached us several times and always with a peaceful and serene movement. It was as though we were not even there. From that moment on the action continued to build, getting better and better.
Hammerhead sharks were seen in large quantities all around the island. Manuelita's dive sites were packed full of life, hundreds of hammerhead sharks approached the cleaning stations, swimming along the white sand and the deep blue. Eagle rays (6+) appeared to be suspended, as they soared gracefully in the currents. A whale shark even approached us on several occasions and on different dives to Dirty Rock.
The manta ray sightings took everyone's breath away. Not only did we see 3 on this trip, but they were very, very big. The size alone astounded all the divers! Last but not least, we need to talk about Alcyone, where the number of hammerheads was breathtaking! They seemed to be everywhere! They swam right over our heads, making several passes in the cleaning station, and coming so close to divers that even as seasoned Cocos dive guides, we were surprised.
But as always, all good things must end and this was no exception. This was an excellent trip that offered divers a chance to see everything, from a batfish to a whale shark. There is no doubt that this was a trip to remember!
As we made our crossing back to the port of Puntarenas, the group enjoyed sunny skies and a calm ocean, we can't help but wonder what Cocos has in store for us next.
