Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) where, many years ago, frequently seen at Cocos Island. They had been absent for decades. They are once again beginning to reappear. To see a recent, beautiful, rock steady video, shot by Toby Meinken, of these magnificent beasts go to:

Amazing video. I wish I'd been there. Some of the text by the videographer, here, for example:

Only later did I learn that Tigers were known to eat two or more divers on the same pass through.

sounds a little fantastic.

Cool thanks for sharing.

Cheers.

Hi vladimir, thanks for the post:

I just got this email from Toby the videograher. He is in agreement with you:

Hey Jeff!
I saw your posting. Very cool, thanks a lot. Maybe you can tell Vladimir, that the quote doesn't origin from the videographer, but from a guest. I think, it's a bit too dramatic, too, but it was just such an incredible experience, that we ended up being like little kids again.

Thanks SSharkk, and thanks Toby. Yeah, I wasn't trying to ride anybody for the quote, just pointing out that you'd probably have a decent chance of not getting eaten on that dive. But I do understand the trepidation as your gas supply winds down and you have to think about an ascent through the tiger sharks. If I'd been there, I'd still be a little giddy over it, so I totally understand that too, and I am very jealous.

Fantastic video, my flatmate Dan (the Italian that's mentioned in the accompanying paragraph) has not stopped talking about the trip since he got back, so want to go there myself now!

Truely an experience not soon forgotten. It doesn't have to be a tiger shark to make your heart beat a little faster. That is of course why we get such a thrill from being in the presence of the man in the grey suit! I have been on dives where Bulls, Reefs, Lemons, and Nurse sharks were just every where you turned, that's what makes diving great.

I sent an email to the charter company to plan a trip for 2010, thanks for the tip!

This is a long delayed response to the Tiger Shark story. I wrote the story for the Sea Hunter. I was along side Toby. YES I threw in melodrama. But the point was to capture the intensity/insanity/exhilaration of the dive. When we first settled to the bottom, Toby and I basically flattened ourselves against the patch of sand we found as the first Tiger passed over us at arm's length. Toby clearly made an "uuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhh" sound through his regulator. This was no ordinary dive.

By the way, Tiger's have been knows to kill two creatures on a single pass. Or maybe I should check that on Snopes.com!
