hi,
i am in the market for a new dive computer and been looking quite firmly at the cochran EMC-16 but as i looking into doing nitrox do most of the computers allow you to switch from air and to nitrox?does the cochran allow switching from oxygen and nitrox? or do you need to have a air only computer and one for nitrox?
Another question what does
One Mix Nitrox - 1 FO2
Two Mix Nitrox - 2 FO2
One Mix Nitrox Switchable to One PO2 - 1 FO2 / 1 PO2
Two Mix Nitrox Switchable to Two PO2 - 2 FO2 / 2 PO2

does the FO2 state nitrox and PO2 state oxygen , and how do you know if you are going to do 32% nitrox or 36% nitrox?

I've been diving my EMC-16H for 2 years.

Depending on the features in your EMC-16H you can run it in 2 modes; PO2 which is used when diving a rebreather and F02 which is the mode you'll run in for Open Circuit.

1 PO2 means you can set 1 Oxygen Partial Pressure setting and 2 means you can set 2. Same with FO2; You can set either 1 or 2 gases (Fraction of Oxygen). You'll be interested in this second setting.

The first gas can be either air or a Nitrox mix up to 40% (EANx40). The second gas can be any gas mixture up to 100% oxygen.

You program the computer with the gases you will be using. You then indicate a switch depth at which you will be switching from Gas 1 to Gas 2. You also program in an time you will spend before reaching the gas switch depth. For example; You plan to spend at least 45 minutes at 125 feet on EANx29. You are carrying a deco bottle of EANx60 which you will be switching to for decompression. The switch will be made at 50 feet. You program the switch at 50. You also know that you have to be down at least 15 minutes before accumulating a deco obligation so you program that in as the time. Now you get to the bottom and after 5 minutes discover a problem. When you begin your ascent the computer will know that you won't be switching to your deco gas and will continue to calculate your dive based on your back gas.

By the way, if you don't do Technical diving then ignore the above paragraph. The EMC-16 is still a great computer for Recreationally diving Nitrox. Several of my dive buddies have them and they're all Rec. You can purchase the computer with 1FO2 for Recreational Nitrox diving and later, if you decide to go Technical, you can have the software upgraded.

Beside what had been mention above:
* If you skip a deep stop, the computer will recalculate your next stop and will extend your final stop (this is huge… no locks, no nuts); so you can force the computer to extend shallow stop.
* The numbers are big.
* One characteristic that I like very much is that you can fix your ascent rate and fix the display of the ascent rate. I set my computer at 9m/min with 3 m of display increment.
* You can deco on bottom gas if you abort the dive using the time programing
* You can use it as bottom timer as there is no locks!
* I use the EMC-20H and I backup my computer with tables.
