I'm looking to take some advanced SSI classes (Nitrox, Stress & Rescue). Seems most shops charge $100 for these, plus the books ($30), open water fees ($30) and equipment rental ($80). == $240. Does that seem right for a simple class?

My SSI Nitrox class was $62.50 plus the cost of the book (around $40.) for a total of between $100 and $110.

How many other LDS are in your area? Call them and ask. Be sure to talk to the instructor who is going to be teaching the class. Then make your decision. You usually get what you pay for, like everything else.

Mine was $125 including the books but not the fills.

You need to see what is included with the class for the price offered.

Some come with books, some they are seperate.
For Nitrox, some include the Nitrox tanks/fills and some don't.
Some include fees for checkout dives, some don't.

My LDS charges $120 for Nitrox class, which includes the tanks for the checkout. Plus around $40-$45 for book/table pack. But they offer it during the winter sale for $69 (and it still includes the tanks/fills) and you can take it anytime during the next year.

The only time I've seen it when a boat trip was included in the fee was when it was taught by a shop that owned a boat or in a resort dive location. The boat dives were included, but I guarentee you the fee was much higher. Like $250 or so for the class.
