Anyone know if you can use a cingular phone in Cozumel without any additional "package" stuff? I use an iphone.

Thanks in advance!

I don't have Cingular, but have the Sprint WorldWide BlackBerry and it works just fine on the island. You will likely only have to pay for international roaming - which is $$$/minute. And you would likely want to turn your data network off as data also is international roaming charges.

Make sure you have international roaming enabled on your account. There's no extra fee, but it isn't always on accounts by default.

This is a must. I forgot to do this with my cingular phone the first time I went overseas with it and it didn't work. The iPhone works in Cozumel and mainland Riviera Maya/Yucatan. Make sure your data roaming is turned off as they charge a fortune for those.

Do a bit of research on their website first to make sure you know what Cingulair calls it - when I called Verizon and told them I was traveling to Mexico and needed to be able to use my phone in Mexico, their response was, "Do you expect to have problems?"

I pointed out that (1) I'd been there before and it didn't work and (2) their website indicated that Mexico (unlike Canada) is a country in which you need to have international dialing activated. That did the trick - but their first reaction was to suggest that it would work automatically.

Once you're in Coz, your Cingular/ATT phone will use the Telcel network -- if it doesn't say Telcel, you may be charged a higher, roaming rate. To dial the US, use the country code 001, followed by the area code & number. To call a land line Cozumel phone, you only need the 7-digit phone number. To call a cell phone in Coz, you dial 044-987-nnn-nnnn; Cancun (if you need it) is 045-998-nnn-nnnn.

Muy Importante: You can't connect to US toll free numbers -- like Cingular's automatic voicemail number. Call 001-908-463-0020 to enter their voicemail system. Also, take a non-toll free US number for your airline in case of a question or problem -- the agents at Coz airport may not be there when you need them or they may not pick up the phone!

Used our ATT(Cingular) phones last November. Calls were .99/minute. We were surprised that no roaming charges ever occured on our bill! Our phones are activated for international calling and for us it's free. We have the 69.99/month package if that tells you anything. Good Luck! Jean

Thanks all for all the information and help. I called AT&T this am and had them activate the international roaming on the phone, whilst I think about the Mexico package ($4.99 a month for $0.69/min roaming instead of $0.99/min.

Just wanted to ensure that my family will be able to call me in the event of an emergency.

........... Now its time to get back to checking out the Coz webcam at ScubaClub in anticipation!!!! :D

The only thing I ran into with the international packages was with AT&T the international packages were only available in a 12 month contract. In other words, you can't just turn it off when you get home, as you can with other carriers like T-Mobile.

So I suck it up and pay the international rates and still end up ahead.
