I've just completed the PADI OW course.
One of the bits of advice was that divers should refrain from smoking cigarettes, drinking etc before after and certainly between dives, as it interferes with the Nitrogen being processed/ expelled by the body?
I'm trying to give up myself, and whilst on my first day boat trip didn't smoke any. Hell, smoking is bad for me anyways!

However, I was suprised that several of the instructors and one of the Technical divers were smoking away on cigarettes.

Is it common for divers to still smoke?

Incidentally, I'm no fitness addict myself (I elected for the mixed grill at lunchtime!), but I was also suprised that many of the divers don't appaer to be in the best of health figure/weight wise?

No it is not common to smoke but I've seen many instructors smoke. They wouldn't be instructing at the shop I work for because of that.

On Maui I saw an instructor run from the water leaving his students trailing behind as he lit one up.

Pretty dumb and what a wonderful example.

What bugs me if they do it on a confined boat space... I have no problem asking them to go down wind.
