Anybody stayed there - not liveaboard.
Would like to know the good and bad sides of the diving, people and the island...
All info appreciated

First trip to Chuk (Truk) we stayed at what is now the Blue Lagoon
Resort (different name then). did our diving land based. Howeveer, if you are serious about diving Chuk, the ONLY way to go is on a liveaboard. WE have done liveaboards there three times. No comparison to a land-based trip. The land based boats are small and most not very nice, and you sit bouncing in the water between dives..not fun. Also the trips out to dive sites can be a bit long sometimes, again not pleasant .
The people on Chuk are very poor and depressing, unlike the natives we have seen in Palau and other South Pacific islands. You may not feel comfortable walking around there. Aside from some WW2 sites, there is little to see and almost no beauty on land. Although everyone thinks of Truk as wreck diving, when you are descending to the ships the superstructures are so covered with corals and tropical fish, you almost think you're seeing strange shaped reefs! The diving is spectacular. Having been there four times, it's our favorite. Go for it, but give serious consideration to a liveaboard. The Odyssey is the very best now. Aggressor is gone.

Dived with Truk Stop - the second land based operation. Clean basic rooms, helpful staff, good guides. Best diving I have ever done - the wreaks are spectacular. Land operations tend to have smaller number of divers per boat - I was diving with 1 guide a lot of the time: helps to keep numbers down when doing penetrations.

Not much to do apart from diving so bring a good book. Would dive with Truk Stop again but am also considering Odyssey next time for a bit of luxury.

Doing a search for chuk or truk should turn up a fair amount of info.

Cheers,
Rohan.

I'd take the thorfinn over the odyssey especially now that they had a major refit just completed.. their new launches are the best available..
