The Cozumel Chrysalis Group is a Mexican non-profit registered charity dedicated to helping Cozumel students with the cost of education. There are many families in Cozumel who lack the financial ability to send their children to public school.
Chrysalis assists students from these families who show a desire to better their lives through education. Mexican public school students are required to pay fees for registration and special exams in addition to providing their own uniforms, classroom supplies and some books. The financial scholastic support and materials provided by Chrysalis directly benefit the students so they can focus on learning and achieving their potential.
In this 2005-2006 school year, Chrysalis currently supports 234 students from elementary through high school. They receive a complete packet of school supplies and special Chrysalis vouchers they can redeem at selected merchants for shoes and uniforms. Registration and book fees are paid directly to the school. No money is given to the students or their families.
Chrysalis works out of a humble room in one of the local neighborhoods. It is a donation that is greatly appreciated. The only overhead is a modest monthly fee to the accountant and an annual audit as required by Mexican law to renew Chrysalis' status as a legal charity.
For the past 8 years, the Cozumel Chrysalis Group has had a booth in the plaza during Carnaval, at which beads, masks and other novelty items are sold. This is one of Chrysalis' major annual fundraisers. It's also an opportunity for visitors to the island to participate in the fun!
This year the booth is being run by Cozumel expert Patricia Holt. She has done a marvelous job of purchasing all the items that will be for sale at the booth. Just wait 'til you see, I don't want to ruin the surprises. The booth will be open February 24-28, from 2pm until 10pm, or a little later if sales are as good as we hope! Volunteer shifts are from 2-6pm and from 6-10pm. Each shift requires 2-3 committed volunteers to help sell these beautiful items. Having worked the booth several years, I can tell you... this is a lot of fun. On top of that, you know you are helping the children of Cozumel. What could be better?
If you are interested in COMMITTING to a particular shift, please contact Patrica at
scubabride2@aol.com, with the date and time you would like to help. Also please include where you are staying in Cozumel in case she needs to reach you.
