My first ocean dive was in Cozumel and I was perfectly at ease with the drift diving. We stayed at Scuba Club Cozumel which at the time was the Galapago Inn (its been many years). You are limited to only 2 boat dives a day and very little shore diving but for a newbie you might want to take it easy anyway.
I love Bonaire and the diving freedom is GREAT but even with my many years of diving I found the shore entries & exits to be a little tricky at times. Myself I would not recommend Bonaire for a newbie. You have other things to consentrate on. I would stick with dive boats where you are taken care of.
My next trip will probably be back to Roatan. Our first trip we stayed at the Inn of Last Resort and were treated like royalty. They have since had a change in management and I don't know what it is like there now. I have not stayed at Fantasy Island but they are having some great deals. From now until the end of December (I think) they are having a 2 for 1 special. I think it is like $979.00 for 2 plus 16% taxes and don't forget to figure in the gratuities. I kinda like an AI because I know "up front" how much the vacation is going to cost me. No surprises on the cost of food and at Fantasy Islan even your drinks are included. I hear that they have some decent shore diving there also. Right now I can fly from the mid-west for about $800 per person. Most flight to & from Roatan are Saturday to Saturday.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Have fun.
