well i thought it my be due to not exhaling right on ascent, then last night it happened during the three minute blackout(covering lights) during a night dive......which i thought might be due to a bit of axiety/stress.......but has anyone ever experienced any chest pain at all while diving if so whats your experience.....it seems that as fast as it comes i can controll it by focusinf on my breathing....will most likely get it chwecked out....but any tips from anyone???.......keep in my mind im a healty male, active diver who is in their late 20's......i say active diver 5-10 dives a week

Hi luckikmc,

Hard to speculate based on this very limited description.

Some questions:

1. Is chest pain the sole symptom, or is there shortness of breath, coughing after the dive, feelings of light-headedness or other signs/symptoms?

2. This has happened only once u/w and you have never experienced such an event topside?

3. Do you in fact experience stress/anxiety while diving?

4. The discomfort completely resolves as soon as you focus on controlling your breathing?

5. Do you have any medical conditions or are you on any medications?

6. Are you a smoker?

Given a healthy, fit, active diver in his late 20's who has no family history of cardiac or respiratory disease, it seems probable that this isolated event was related to breath-holding on ascent, hyperventilation or the like. However, at this point that cannot be stated with certainty. Therefore, it would be prudent to see your PCP and explain what occurred.

Please let us know what you find out.
