I was at Divers Supply In Marietta GA the other day upgrading my snorkeling gear and was referred to SB in response to questions about Caribbean places to visit.
OK, I am originally from Long Island NY, but has moved up and down the east coast my adult life.
While in the Navy, we went on a 5 week work trip to Key West where I had my first experience snorkeling. I immediately liked it and purchased my own gear and hit the beach practically every day. Also in the Navy got to make a couple of trips to Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico.
Fast forward to July of last year, stayed at Breezes resort in Curacao while on a 45 day work trip. Mostly snorkeled the beach jetty near the hotel, but also took a trip to Klein Curacao while there. Really got the bug while in Curacao.
October of last year we returned for another 50 day work trip Back to Curacao, but this time staying at the Hilton. This time I was equipped with a housing for my Nikon P3. This trip, I worked the nite shift, so I tagged along with 2 co-workers who shore dived quite often, and I snorkeled at the same entry places they went. I hit at least 20 different locations on Curacao. Some were hit more than once and a couple were 3 visits. The days I didnt go with them I usually just hit the water at the Hilton. Got lots of pics and video this trip. Playa Lagun, Playa Kalki and The Tugboat were my most favorite spots to visit.
January, we stayed at a hotel in Rincon, Puerto Rico for another 6 week trip. Didn't do much snorkeling here, not much to see at the hotel beach and the visibility pretty much sucked. Did visit the concrete steps twice, once with horrible visibility, and once it was OK. I guess three months in Curacao last year spoiled me as far a visibility. Also hit Crashboat Beach in Aquadilla one time. Nice to visit as well.
OK fast forward once again to this week, was planning a last minute vacation someplace in the Caribbean, and when in the local dive shop I asked for any recommendations for travel. I was referred to these boards to get some ideas. I finally decided to go to Barbados on the 27th of August for fun in the sun sand and water. I probably will even take the plunge and get open water qualified while I am there.
Thats about it for now, will report back with a trip report from Barbados.
