Anyone knows where I could find the cheapest accommodation possible in Truk, and Yap, 'cause as I am travelling alone I can't see myself paying those overpriced rates of 125$ for 1 person's room. Any room for max 50-70$ ?
And when u arrive at the airport, is it like the maldives that u must have an accommodation to show the authorities on arrival or u don't need one ?

As a non american, do I need visa/permit when entering those islands or can I get them on arrival, if needed ?

Thanks for the help !

Hi,

I can't help with cheap accommodation, but I can help with the other questions.
The FSM immigration form that you receive on the flight, has a place to write where you will be staying. They don't check, so you can just write the name of any hotel that you find the name of on the internet that is on that island.
Visitors from just about any country in the world can stay for 30 days in the FSM, & then extend the 30 days twice, giving you a maximum of 90 days. Since you will have to travel via Guam when traveling from Chuuk to Yap, you could stay up to 90 days in each place, as you will have left the country on the way.
Hope this helps.
By the way, Micronesia only receives a small number of tourists at any time, so that contributes to making accommodation more expensive, but the benefit of that, is only a few other tourists around. For example, Bali has really cheap accommodation, but there seem to be 50,000 other tourists there at any one time.

You can get a room on Chuuk for well under $100. I think the Truk Stop which is clean and centrally located is closer to $75 and maybe less. You can often bargain with them also. The main tourist hotels in Yap are pretty expensive but I'd be surprised if they didn't have some locally owned places that are more reasonable.

Thanks for all these responses, I will start to plan my trip over there very soon.

If you don't mind "going native", the Pathways Hotel in Yap offers a "guest hut" for $50/night. I walked by it several times, kind of reminded me of the Robinson Crusoe "ride" at Disneyland with all the tree houses, and I recall they had a bat in a cage by the restaurant (knowing that they're a delicacy in nearby Palau, perhaps this guy was destined for someone's soup).

Honestly, the only thing I remember arriving at the Yap airport is the topless teenage girl who put a lei around my neck.

Good info, i'll contact them. thanks !
I hope to get the same topless girl on arrival haha :D
I call to the Truk Stop but seems that prices were at 100$, that's the cheapest I got, any other suggestions for Truk ?

There are a couple of local non diving hotels on Truk. I don't have much information on them however.
Pacific Gardens
Christopher Inn

You should also be able to get the Truk Stop down to $80 or so. Just tell them you'd like to visit but the price is just a little beyond what you want to spend. I've seen them sell rooms for as little as $65.
