Hi all,

I'm a beginner at UW photography, and am looking to spend $200 or less on a compact strobe for the Canon WP-DC47, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Go with Interceptor121 on this. You will outgrow a cheap strobe so quickly that you will wish you hadn't wasted $200 on it. Buy a good one and it will last many, many years, likely through several camera upgrades.

I am hesitant to offer a contrary position, given my lack of expertise relative to the other responders. (I'm not a particularly good dry-land photographer and not a particularly good underwater photographer).

However, there are deals to be had out there. I recently picked up a SeaLife 960D on eBay for <$45. No it's not the last word in underwater strobes, yes it is not going to be the limiting factor for my photography for quite a while.

Unless you need the strobe immediately, check eBay and Craigslist. You might be pleasantly surprised.

John is right ebay is worth checking however strobes tend to be abused and you need to know who you are buying for
You can save some 100 but sill get a decent unit (sorry not sealife)
Arm and trays: check ebay for sure

Don't skimp on a strobe. You will regret it if you stay in underwater photography for any length of time.

I purchased a used Inon D-2000w a few years ago, and I can sell it today for the exact same price, maybe even a buck or two more. Quality strobes will last through generations of camera technology and will hold their value very well. Ikelite, Inon, Sea & Sea.

I agree with the general opinion. I bought an Inon S2000 last summer for my G12, which was not cheap but it is a good (and VERY compact) strobe for most cases. Still, with hindsight, I wish I had gone for the Inon Z240 as in some cases I felt I needed more power. As I said, for most cases my S2000 is more than enough, but when shooting into the sun (a seafan or a reefscape for example), I find that a more powerful strobe would have been better. With the S2000, I have to chose between a slightly overexposed background or a slightly underexposed foreground. Of course the problem is also due to the limited wide angle capability of the G12, as in order to get all you want in the frame you need to go quite far away, which means a stronger strobe is required. For macro, no problem at all of course.

If you shoot raw, you have more room to play with the exposure later and in many cases you can still get decent results.

I was trying to post a photo to show what I meant but for some reason it says "You may not post attachments". Might have to do with the fact that I am a new user... Anyone knows how to post attachments?

I agree that you should check for used first... look at the classifieds on this forum and on wetpixel as they're usually well taken care of.

I love my Inon S2000 and have used it with 3 different camera/housing setups... it's compact, goes 4 dives without my needing to change batteries and gives me all the power I need for my photo purposes. There are more choices out there now than when I bought mine so look around and read up on the different choices. I would, however, stay with either Inon, S&S or Ike.
