For the last five years we have stayed at the same hotel in Playa on our annual get-away. Since we go there to dive caves we have decided to try something further south but boy do the prices go up once you get out of PDC.
Anyone have a recommendation for some reasonably priced rooms for a small group of divers somewhere between PDC and Tulum? We always rent a car so it can be a little out of the way.

Well, I rent a 2 bedroom condo in Puerto Aventuras. It has a HUGE covered patio to dry dive gear, and a washer/dryer. If we put 5 people in it (one sleeps on the hideabed in the living room) it's $40 a night per person. Having the kitchen means we can do our own breakfasts, and pack lunches, and even cook dinner a couple of nights, which saves a TON of money. In addition, PA has the convenience of being able to walk to dinner, on the nights you go out, and walk home (so you don't have to chance the policia after a couple of margaritas.) If this sounds interesting, I'll give you the name of the agent I book through.

Thanks Lynne but that is about double what I expect to pay. On my first trip down in 2005 I paid $25 /night then $35, last time it was $40 now I am looking at $80? Sheesh, Mexico used to be a cheap vacation. Maybe I have to go to South East Asia. Lots of cave in PI.
