Hi,

I'm off to cozumel as part of a cruise in november. Could anyone tell me if the snorkelling is great off the beach or is the reef out some great distance. I've heard great things about the chanakanaab reef, but i've also heard some great things about currents, so not being the most experienced snorkeler i would be grateful for any info.

I enjoyed snorkeling there, and didn't have any trouble with currents. Make sure you rent a vest if you don't bring your own just in case you tire easily. Catch a cab from the drop off, and just pay the park entry fees. DO NOT sign up for the tour. No problem getting a cab on the way out, but as always, allow for some extra time. At the park, there are lounge chairs, thatched shelters, and a few dive/snorkel ops right on the beach.

If you are going to Cayman also I can tell you a great spot to go to for nothing, and it's a short walk from the tender drop off.

Cheers Kristi. Sounds like you were on a cruise too before. Sounds cool in Cozumel. Didnt book any tours there yet. What can you tell me about the cayman islands. Naturally i'll only be there for the day, so it'll prob be seven mile beach or around. Stingray city seems to be where everyone goes, but to be honest it just looks like too much to me. Its like they are in captivity or something, much prefer to see them in the real wild

GO TO STINGRAY CITY!!!! They are a "tame", but it is WAY cool.

Where the tender lets you off at Cayman, go up to the street (straight in front of you)and take a right. Walk about 1/4 mile, and on your right you'll see a a small patch of beach with about 10 beach chairs (to rent) and about 4 picnic tables next to the "shop/bar/restaurant. There's a sign that lets you know you can rent snorkel scuba gear there. Use of the picnic tables is free. Entry/exit is a tad rough at times. Great snorkeling in that area. Again, I'd advise a vest so you don't tire.

I have snorkeled that location 3 different times. It's great and the price is right.

Chakanaab I have only done once. I did a catamaran snorkel trip one other time, and the mayan ruins the other.

Jamaica if you are going is a "stay on the boat" stop IMO, unless there is some shopping you wish to do. Last time I was there, watches were the great deal.

And yes, I have done that itinerary 3 times.

What cruise line are you on?

Just went on a Carnival cruise over Labor Day with a stop in Cozumel. We took a cab to Chankanaab and did a single dive with Ramon Zapata Divers who operate from one of the Palapas in the park. After the dive we hung out on the beach for a while then went back in and did about 1 1/2 hours of snorkelling up and down the reef in the park.

The reef in Chankanaab is very shallow (10-15 feet for the most part). There was tons of stuff to see.

Thanks for the advice. I'm travelling with Royal Caribbean. We've booked 2 cruises back to back, one eastern caribbean (peurto rico, st maarten, st thomas, and nassau), and the western caribbean (grand cayman, cozumel, jamaica and haiti). Really looking forward to it. Bringing my scubapro split fins and cressi mask to go snorkelling and i've got 4 dives booked, 2 in miami and 2 in st maarten. Couldnt really do any others due to the fact that my girlfriend is a non diver, but she is a snorkeler so i've had to compromise somewhat. Luckily i love snorkelling so i should be okay!!!

I will be on that Royal Car. ship too Nov 5th-12th (one starting in Puerto Rico) but I will be working and not playing. Actually I will be playing the first two days. I am an actor and we will be filming on the boat but I don't start shooting until the 7th. Nothing fancy, just some HR videos for the ship. Anyway, My wife and I have cruised to Coz and Cayman and also suggest taking a cab to the park in Coz and not going on an excursion. One other place to snorkel in Cayman is Eden Rock, also the name of the dive op on the spot. You will be able to see the Eden Rock sign when your tender pulls in to the port at Cayman. A quick 4 minute walk to the right along the sidewalk (assuming you are facing in towards town and away from the water) and in the water you go. Tons of life! You can rent gear from them too. I dove it last year from the ship. Have fun! When will you be there exactly?

I'm sure that's the same place I was describing in Cayman. Sounds like it. Can't remember the name though!

Snorkeldude, You lucky DAWG . Back to back cruises. Life doesn't get much better..........RC is great. have done that and Carnival and RC is WAY better. Hint: If you are having a lot of fun at your table, they'll have the engineer or capt. join you. THAT is a blast, and they provide all the booze for the dinner that night.

Snorkeldude,
You might want to look into going over to the El Cid/La Ceiba hotel beach also for snorkeling. There is a dive site there, the Airplane Wreck. When I was there last year, cruise ship patrons were using the beach at the hotel (I suppose the cruise line had an arrangement with the hotel). Its very close to the Int'l Pier.

Good idea. You could also go to Caribe Blu for the day as well. We did that on a cruise but we dove with them. Nice snorkel spot.
