I'm off to Palau & Yap in two weeks and I was planning to do a Chambered Nautilus dive with Neco Marine. Some folks in my dive group suggested that we should avoid this as the capture and release of these animals for the dive is harmful to them and that they usually die on their return trip to depths that they usually live at.

This is the first I had heard of this and I was wondering if there is any truth to it, as I wouldn't want to support a dive that was harmful to these animals.

Cheers,
Kent

According to the Captain of the erstwhile Telita, they tagged or marked Nautiluses they'd caught and later recaptured many of them. Not exactly a published, peer reviewed study, so take it for what it's worth. I share your reluctance.
