We are staying at the aforementioned Beach resort in early July for a week with 6 days of diving. Just looking for any info that might be useful to someone who has not been to Brac before. Is Nitrox available? Is getting from the airport a problem? Can you rent scooters for sightseeing? Does anyone know where the Teignmouth Electron is? The kind of stuff that you would exclaim after arrival, damn, I wish I had known that!

Been diving for a while, new to the forum, would appreciate any insight

A busy hurricane season is expected. Too early to probably get one, but get trip insurance just in case. Brac reef resort is next to the airport and will pick you up. Nitrox available , bikes available and the Electon was gone with Paloma. The island is the friendliest in the caribbean. Explore the new cave they uncovered of Songbird road. Grab your climbing gear, Brac has the best rock climbing around. Snorkel around the East end, spectacular walls and huge rock fall with plenty of big fish. Pick a calm day and use a flag. The West End is hit hard by the dive boats, so go ahead and find some spots on the south or north side for some fun shore dives. You can always find your own secret spot. No crime anywhere, so at night, explore the tide pools near high school for morays and octopus. The octopus are on the prowl, and their colors are beautiful. Usually see plenty of baby morays. I happen to think the walk to see the face on Little Cayman Brac to be one of the prettiest walks you can go on. To see the face you have to walk all the way to the end of Long Beach. Enjoy the Island. Some people just like to hang out at the Reef Resort and that's fun as well. Cheers

MJ,

The resort does have nitrox, and it is a very convenient system. They will have a little van/bus at the airport waiting for you to arrive and they will carry you to the resort. It is a very short trip down around the end of the airport. You can rent scooters or I believe the resort has bikes available. A better option depending on how much time you want to spend doing it might be to ask the resort to set up a sightseeing tour. I know when we were there a few years back, the resort had somebody who you could pay a small amount to and get a good tour of the island, including a chance to stop at the caves, visit the top of the Brac, etc. It really is a fairly small island, so unless you just like riding scooters more than laying in a hammock in the afternoon, there really isn't more than about a half a day worth of exploring to do.

I am sorry you could only find laying in a hammock the only activity on Brac other than diving. It is hard to gauge what people think is interesting. Fortunately, we have Disney Worlds and Vegas for those that can't find anything to do in the Caribbean. Cheers

Wow...misread my post much? I wasn't disparaging the island or its attractions at all. I was simply pointing out that for people who might not realize how small the island is, it doesn't take a long time to see the whole island on a scooter. Alot of folks will go somewhere like Cozumel or GC and plan to rent a car or a scooter all week "to explore", knowing that there are many restaurants and other things to see and do that are some distance away from where they are staying. As you well know, that does not describe the Brac at all. Being that the Island is only 12 miles long and about 14 square miles in total area, there simply isn't that far to ride a scooter, hence my statement regarding only needing a scooter for a half day or so. If you just like to ride a scooter, then by all means, get one for a week and do multiple laps every day...otherwise, if you plan what you want to see properly, you can see most of it in less than a full day.

I have been to a wide variety of attractions on the Brac and enjoyed all of them. I have spent several hours on Little Cayman just watching birds at the pond. However, most of the attactions to see on the Brac or LC are not day long adventures like you would find in geographically larger places. Unless you engage a local with some historical knowledge to show you around (which is what I suggested), the things to see and do besides diving just aren't super time consuming adventures. The comment I made about the hammock was simply to say that when I go to a quiet island far off the beaten path for a vacation; while I like to explore, I would prefer to spend most of my free time relaxing under a palm tree instead of riding laps around a 12 mile (albeit newly paved) island road on a scooter multiple days in a row.

Hello MJ,
Here's the location of the Teignmouth Electron: Latitude 19 deg, 41 min, 10.58 sec north and Longitude 79 deg, 52 min, 37.99 sec west. Drive .34 miles west from the Captains Table restaurant to where the airport chainlink fence leaves the road. There is a pile of rocks on the left side of the road and the trimaran will be just south of there. Don't expect too much.

We are going to the Brac for a 2nd time this Aug. I have to admit there isn't a whole lot to do. But we have found a great villa ( with amazing snorkelling ) where to get the best grub and homemade pies so we dive and chill!

Thanks to all! Answered all of my questions. Diving will be the daily priority, but we like to explore & the less developed the better, in my opinion. Thanks for the information on the electron. I grew up (and sailed) in Britain & the story of Donald Crowhurst always fascinated me. Just hope the weather holds & the dive gear all works!

The Electron wasn't all that bad until Paloma. Fairly intact prior to 2008. Not seaworthy by any stretch of the imagination but pretty cool to check out at the time. Someone, locally, was going to attempt to make a it into a "tourist site" but nothing ever came of it. The Electron has gone the way of the Divi. Sad.
