Another possibilityis stomach acid. Sometimes I can feel the acid when swimming horizontal nonstop for long times, more likely after drinking coffee/soda.

As others have posted, work your way up - I've seen people die after overexertion in the pool. Death really cramps your scuba plans as well ;)
 
Silly question coming -

The 200 yard swim - is that done wearing fins or without?
