ok i went to the pool to work on my 200 yr swim.i asked one lifeguard how long the pool was and they 23.4 meters so i decided 8 lengths of the pool was long enough and their was a different lifeguard swimming laps and they asked what i was needing to know. well i said i need to work on swimming 8 laps "my mistake should said 8 lengths"
but i never swim distance before and they said they would help and said we do this stroke first then this then this to rest then repeat.
anyways to make a long story short i end up swimming 500 meters nonstop so the 200 yards should be easy.
any ways after i got out of the pool i felt real weak and a little dizzy.i felt i just over worked my self and went and got a drink of water and was sitting down out of the pool after about 5 min i still felt a lil weak and i went back to the bathroom because i just knew what was coming ......... i got a lil sick and it was all water so was it just i over worked my self and swallowed more water then what i thought i did or is this something to worried about.
last time a swam any distance was back in the late 90s lately i just go the pool and swim around for 5 -10 min a lot of playing then swim a little more. i can say i have never swam 500 meters at one time non stop in my life thanks for the input

What part of the Hemisphere are you in? If you are in the Northern Hemisphere I'd say it was exhaustion, but if you are in the Southern Hemisphere I'd have to say exhaustion. ;)
Did you drink lot's of water before you started the laps?
Are you a smoker?
Are you overweight?
Do you exercise?
Was it hot?
Did you have plenty of rest the night before?
Did you party the night before?
So many variables.
I'm no doctor, but try working up to greater and greater distances gradually.
Good luck on your Scuba classes, will your check out dives be in fresh or salt water?
It would help if you fill out your profile, so others may be better informed about you when trying to answer your questions.

Although I'm no doc, this sounds like a little overexertion...

You don't mention your age, but if you've been inactive for a few years (been there, done that, and back again :) ), it may be "normal"...

Also, how fast were you swimming?

If it is overexertion, you should probably be fine today, IMHO.

ya i felt a lot better after getting sick

i live in ca 32 240 pounds so so active i play basketball sometimes other then that nothing really

no i didn't eat or drink anything before i went to the pool.
temp indoor pool
no party's no smoking or drinking
how fast diff speeds the first few i went faster then i slowed down then the last couple i went fast again you know how it is your want to stop and your almost done you speed up a little to get it over faster

ya i felt i just over did it but in most cases you will always tell your self its nothing because you don't want to think its anything until its to late

Not an expert, but it does sound like you over did it.

Oh, and by the way, welcome to diving in SoCal. Do not forget to come on down to the North America, United States, California Kelp Divers, SoCal sub forum on this board and say hello. Lots of fantastic diving right here in SoCAl with beautiful kelp forrest and rock reefs.

I did my 200 in February. I did not get sick but I was quite winded and a bit over heated. The pool was 85 which some in the class were wearing shorties and tops (the wetsuit kind) :) but I am a bit warm blodded. I weigh about 325 so I also could stand to loose a few pounds. At any rate when I got out the DM asked if I was ok.. If it was not for the heat in the pool (I live in PA) I would have felt better. After I set up my unit for class I felt better. A co-worker of mine "yacked" after his swim, he is admitidly not a strong swimmer. I feel that I am but I have to admit that the 200 took a bit more than I expected. Of corse I did it cold turkey after a long winter of not doing much :-) I deserved what I got. Good for you attempting to condition before the swim, I ment to do that too :). I too am no doctor but just lake anything if you over do it your body reminds you that cant be iron man one week and couch potato the next.

Good Luck
John

Hmmm... Diving in SoCal...

That would sound like a dream come true...

Now, if I only could get a job offer there...

OK, hijack and daydream over.

Thanks for your patience!!

Sounds like over exertion and maybe dehydration. Just because you are in water, don't forget to drink fluids just like you would if you were going jogging. Also be sure you body has the fuel to work out...eat something, low-fat, high-protein, and moderate carbs...an energy bar would probably work. Lastly, take your time, slow and steady paced. Hope that helps. :)

I couldn't swim 200 yards if there was a winning lotto ticket waiting at the end. I have GOT to work on my fitness.

im 45, fat and unfit, it took me twice as long to swim the 200 yards than anyone else on the course, i just took my sweet time, nobody cared! its really not a race, you should just do it at your own slow pace.
