Anyone ever dove on Cat Island in the Bahamas? I'm going to get to make 3 dives there the second week of August, and am wondering what the diving is like and who the best operator to go with is.

thanks

Airplane.

I think there's a resort or two, and one dive op.

if there is only one dive op, why are you asking who is the best to go with?? (read your first post)

Best of luck!! Be sure to post a trip report. I'd like to here what it's like there. We visit Grand Bahama often.

We've been to Cat Island but we didn't dive. It was kid of a desolate place. We rented a house from a doctor from Tampa over the internet. The pictures looked great but when we got there the inside of the house wasn't finished (plywood floors etc). To top it off the good doctor flies in in his twin prop with his girlfriend and says he's going to share the house with us. We shared a beer and they went to a friend's place....

As I remember it there is a small community on the North end, maybe a 40 mile stretch and then a small resort (Hawk's Nest ?) on the South end. I have never seen so many snakes as there were on that road. Hundreds of them. We stopped in on Hawk's Nest for lunch. It was very nice (but Spartan) and the owner's were super. I suspect that is the dive-op you will be using but I think fishing is the real specialty there. The beaches on the windward side were beautiful and you probably won't see another soul there.

The highest point on the island, which I think is the highest point in the Bahamas is an old monk's cave. You can probably kill an hour there. We went to Cat Island figuring we would enjoy fresh fish every meal but the locals don't fish anymore. It doesn't pay since one of the cruise lines (Carnival ?) bought an island in the channel between Cat and Eluethra (sp ?). Now all the locals work in the casino :)

Anyway - have a good trip.

Urm...hmm. *thinks fast* I did a little research after that and found out some more about it....

Thanks for the input lhpdiver. Yes, Hawk's Nest is where we will be landing, staying, and diving. Can you tell me any more about the resort from what you saw?

thanks
