First of all, what an excellent forum! After sculking around for a while my husband finally got 'us' a username so I can ask some questions about Cozumel- our next intended dive trip destination 8-14 september.

We are hoping to dive with Christy at Blue XT but still have to decide on a place to stay and have narrowed it down to two options as we would prefer to be close to town. Has anybody stayed at Casa Mexicana or Hotel Cozumel and what are your experiences?

Thanks a bunch!

Catty

Hey there! Did you get the message I sent you last night? I hope so, if not let me know and possibly provide an alternate e-mail address where I can resend it to.

For what it's worth, Casa Mexicana would be my choice :)

Casa Mexicana - nicer, more expensive, no beach or shore diving, short walk to public dock, in town, no AI option, close to restaurants

Hotel Cozumel - more rustic, cheaper, beach across the street, shore diving, dock, about half a mile south of town, AI option available (so-so food)

Cheers,

Christy! Yes I did get your msg this morning! My husband was trying to call you earlier to discuss further etc- but as you can see we are just putting the pieces together. Typical us : getting the diving sorted first and then the accomodation...;-)

It's leaning towards CM right now- but in terms of chillin' at the pool when we are not didving- just how small is it?

It's very small and shallow. More of a wading pool to cool off or sit in while soaking the sun. But they do have many lounge chairs and it is much quieter than the pool at the hotel cozumel, which is more of a "party" atmosphere. Really just depends on which you prefer. :)

I don't have any phone messages, but I was in and out all morning running errands and getting trips in and out.

You can also visit the live chat feature on my website now :) If the icon says "Click here for a real person" I'm online...if it says "away" or "click here to leave a message" I will receive an e-mail message from you.

Hotel Coz was ok...I couldnt live without a pool so that would easily be my deciding factor. Having the dock right there is REALLY nice. Aside from the pool and dock, I'd be at Casa Mexicana . Apparently you can drink the tap water too...
You can walk to town from Hotel Coz...

WAHHHOOOO IM LEAVING AGAIN TOMORROW ! Fiesta Americana

Without a doubt, Casa Mexicana! I´m sitting in their "internet room" as I type this. This has been my third trip to Coz. The first time we stayed at the old Plaza Los Glorias (okay). The second time we stayed at the Reef Club (so-so). This time it was Casa Mexicana (absolutely great!). True, the pool isn´t all that big (although we did get 20+ inebriated divers in it last night), but the rooms are very comfortable, the staff makes you feel like royalty, and the food has been superb. I would most definitely stay here on future trips.

Have only stayed at Hotel Cozumel, so can't really compare. We really enjoyed the stay there. Room was nice, cool, very well maintained, and the maids created fantastic towel sculptures every day! At least two huge pools, poolside snack bar & bar-bar, restaurant ok -- not great, but good enough for us, short walk under the street to the beach/dive shop/pier & seaside restaurant. Nightly stage entertainment, if that suits you -- we were too busy sleeping. We're not party'ers, but you could make it like that if you want. Can not think of anything at all negative about H.C.

Why not each get your own ID, they're free! Then you can talk about each other. ;)

I have only stayed at Hotel Cozumel as well. It was a nice hotel. Breakfast was great but the dinners were merely ok so we are doing the European plan next week as we ate out every night anyway last year. There are just so many restaurants that are so affordable in Cozumel. I think we ate lobster every night.

The beach club is across the street but there is a nice tunnel under the street so you never really leave the resort. The night life was fun but its not buck wild like Cancun is. Its mostly divers and was pretty laid back.

We walked into town alot and Chidraui (Mexican Walmart as we call it) is easy to walk to for whatever you need. Pharmacy, Liquor, Food...

Having the dock right there was nice and the water is right at 18 feet which makes for nice easy shore dives to check out gear etc. Snorkeling is great there too. Lots of fish to see.
