Hey, my wife and I are thinking about going to Utila and staying at one of the private islands and diving Captain Morgan's. The only trip reports I've found on Captain Morgan's are from 2009...anyone have anything more recent?

Additionally, I heard that a pod or orcas had been seen in Utila recently, I personally find it unlikely but does anyone have any info on this?

Also, what are chances we'll encounter whale sharks in August?

Im facebook friends with many people living on utila. Haven't heard anything about orcas, but I think it was 2 days ago I heard the crew of deep blue got the chance to swim with 100 dolphins for over 20 minutes. So jealous.

No experience with Capt Morgan, sorry.

Oh, and having been to utila 5 times staying around three months total I have not yet seen a whaleshark. Enjoy utila for every other reason, and if you see a whaleshark consider it a huge (no pun) bonus of the trip.

The Caribbean has at least one pod of ocras that are either resident or pass through and they can be seen at the north west end of utila most typically around late July/early August. When they have been spotted it is usually just for that one day as they pass by. We also see sperm whales on a yearly basis, as well as the year round several species of dolphin, including pilot whales. All great to swim with, but keep your distance from pilot whales - watch them from a distance and don't try to interact as you would with dolphins.

Try search Trip Advisor for reviews as well as scubaboard.

You have a chance of whale sharks in August - the first week or so in August I have noticed often brings several encounters, more reliably than June or July. Last year I don't recall any encounters in this week.

Have you checked availability on the cays that you can rent. I tried the other day for a 3 or 4 night visit over a weekend sometime in the next 4 weeks and there was no availability :( I could get mid-week but working mid-week.
