hi, as a newbie divers can people advise if Cape town is a mad place to dive due to fear of great white sharks.Whilst I know the chance of attack is low we ae concerned how likely it may be and the risk of panicking if we see anything? We are also wanting to dive with the seals near partridge point as we dived with seals in the UK but again is this a silly idea?
Thanks

I went diving at that site in 2000 during a visit without incident. 1st dive was on a wreck at 20m and the 2nd about 3/4 of a kilometer from Seal Rock. The seals are fantastic swimming from just below you then upwards to look you right in the eye...

I'm doing a DM internship in the area. We dive in false bay almost every weekend and have yet to have any encounter with sharks. I have heard about people reporting sightings of great white's but I am not sure how accurate these reports are. Diving at seal island is not recomended but there are some really nice other spots along the coast.
Check out shark alley (with 7 gill cow sharks) and Windmill beach. I have seen seals often at windmill beach. On the atlantic side Justin's caves is a good spot to dive.
The smutswinkel wrecks in simonstown are really nice artificial reefs but they are only accesible by boat.
If you intend on diving with an operator I would recommend Pisces diver's in simonstown.
Be sure to dive with a thick wet suit and gloves or wear a dry suit as the water is very cold +-13 degrees celsius.
