howdy all, thank you to everyone who replied to my last post. i ended up choosing a canon s70 after much debate. so far, so good. however, in trying to set up the strobe that i bought i can't find how many pre-flash' it has. the manual doesn't seem to cover it. i've done a little digging and read one post that "thought" that the s70 has only one pre-flash. can anyone confirm that for me?

cheers, -'lil timmy

lil timmy I don't have my S70 anymore but I am pretty sure it is a single pre flash. what strobe are you using?

I have a Canon S70 with a Sea and Sea YS-25 strobe. I have the strobe pre-flash setting on 2. It is synced perfectly at that setting.

Try this. Point your camera at the strobe, and take a picture. If the picture does not record the strobe firing, try a different pre-flash setting on the strobe, and repeat this process until you capture a picture of your strobe firing. When your strobe is burning out the picture, you are synced.

Where did you get your s70? I have been unable to find a good price on a used one.

If you set the camera to Manual mode, or maybe it's the strobe to M mode, there is no preflash. Outside of that I'm not sure, and don't have a good way to test it as I don't have a *digital* strobe that ignores preflash.

It's easy to figure out however. Get in a darkish room, and set the camera to a stopped down aperture in A mode and/or block the flash. Shoot, and you should get an underexposed image assuming the flash can not handle the subject distance and/or aperture. Once you get the underexposed image, than you can start trying a test with the off camera flash. If you can see the results with the external flash have increased the flash exposure, you have the preflash setting right.

As I indicated using Manual mode will result in no preflash so you need to test that as well. I just can't remember if the flash has a separate Manual mode or if setting the camera to the M mode also set's the flash to M mode. I don't have the camera with me, so I can not just go look! :D
