Hi - This is a great forum! It's been really helpful in learning about equipment, but I still have a question. I own an S500 with the Canon housing, and am in the market for an external strobe. I'm looking at the Sea & Sea YS-90 Auto vs the Inon D-180. Does anyone have any opinions about which is better?

For Inon users, has anyone had problems with the preflash mimic function? I read somewhere that the Canon preflash sequence is so fast that, after mimicking the preflash, the strobe may not have time to charge up fully for the actual shot. Is this true? Does this mean that a strobe that ignores the preflash (like the YS-90) is better?

I appreciate any and all advice - I'm hoping to get my new strobe in time for a trip to Cozumel in April!

Welcome to the board.
I am not using Cannon (Oly 5050- Inon D180) but I find the preflash a non issue. I shoot strictly in manual mode so the preflash is not used. With some experience I suspect that you will end up using manual as well. The preset modes just don't do the job for UW photography. Most all of the experienced photographers here are using manual. Give it a try, I think you will find it's not that difficult and the results are a lot better.

D-180 is obsolete. It is replaced with D-2000 which I have used with my Digital Elph-300 and seems to work pretty well
