I'm looking at upgrading my Canon A40 to a Canon S410. My other camera is an Olympus c5050 with strobes and lenses, so I'm very adept to knowing how the cameras work. This one will basically be used for my girlfriend UW, but I'm wondering if anybody can offer any critiques of the S410 as well as if anybody has any info on the video quality that comes from it.

The only problem I see is the rechargeable battery (I would prefer AA), but my main draw to this camera is also the smallness so that I can fit it in my pocket to take around topside (I need something smaller than the A40). Thanks!

I have the S500 (same housing and same size as S410, but with the 5MP rather than 4)..similar sort of price (I got mine on Amazon a few months back for just over $400)

I didn't really have any problems with the battery, just when you travel, make sure you take the recharger, so you can recharge over night each night. I took it diving for several 4 tank all-day dives and never had a problem with the battery running out or even getting low (although I do tend to turn off the camera between shots if I haven't taken any for several minutes, and usually wait until the end of the last dive before looking through and showing people the shots I took [apart from those shots you want to make sure are ok]). The video is pretty good - you choose the resolution (which then determines the length of video you can shoot and the quality) - I took some nice ones doing some shark dives (but then again, I've not really seen the video from other cameras in order to give a good comparison)

As you mention - small size for topside use is great

Are you using the Canon manufactured housing or the Seal housing or some third one? I've been looking at the Seal aluminum housing very small but it's kind of pricey.

I have the S410 and love it. Easy to use and takes great pictures. Fully charged battery lasts at least 150 shots plus upload.

As for underwater, I have no clue how it will perform.

How much is the housing and how is the picture quality underwater? Do I need extra lighting? Thanks
