I have an option to get a Canon S3 or Nikon D50 for free! So, I figure why not? Or, I can sell the one I get and buy a Rebel XT...ha...anyone have a view on either of those two?

D50 hands down.

BUT, I'd probably sell it for $3-350 and buy a D70s and house it. Much better camers, easier to use. We have housings for either at around $850-870.

Or sell it and buy a D80, mine rocks!

SLR vs. compact that is just as big as an SLR... D50, easy. Only nice advantage for the S3 is video capability.

D50 - no questions asked.

The S3 wants to be a DSLR. It is for those who cannot come up with the funds to buy good glass, or refuse to accept that DSLR image quality is superior. The S3 is the Civic to the XTi Accord. (The 30D would be an Acura?)

If you already have a decent point & shoot style camera get the DSLR so you can try something new.

If you have no decent camera currently, there are reasons to go either way but I would personally choose the DSLR.

I would recommend going with the D50. There are some nice housing options for that camera (Sea & Sea, Ikelite, Fantasea).

Selling and going with an Xt or the new XTi isnt a bad idea either as there are a number of quality housings for those cameras as well.
