While the S1IS is starting to get dated at 3MP (although it still takes great pictures), I decided it was still the cheapest route to an underwater camera since my initial investment was long past. I ordered the Canon housing from Amazon and have been using it at the beach and around the boat thus far to get used to the housing.

I've had better luck with video than with photos - I think it is less picky about focus. I've started a underwater photo gallery for my canon at http://destinsharks.com/v/underwater/canons1is/ . Jellyfish were out on Labor Day and I did manage to capture a video of one swimming by my swim platform (http://destinsharks.com/day-to-day-boating/81 ). Amazing creatures, just wish they didn't sting.

Hopefully, I'll get it out on a dive soon. I'm hoping some friends will dive the Oriskany yet this fall and I can loan it to them.

yep... If you have one... one note of caution. keep the camera in the u/w housing. It is extremely susceptible to dust. Had to get mine repaired, because I left it on the table for too long in a very dusty environment.

I too have the S1IS with the Canon housing. I bought a relatively cheap sealife strobe and tried it out by Quadra Island in BC a couple of weeks ago. It was my first cold water dive as well as my first dive using manual controls on the camera and with the strobe.
After looking at some of the pictures, I wish I had just sat still and looked closer. There was so much colorful life in those waters that I could have taken better pictures if I just anchored myself and used more macro.
Anyway. Considering it was first wetsuit dive, first drift dive and first strobe dive.. it worked out.

I get that same thing when I take pics. I look back at them and say to myself, "I don't remember that". But the camera gets the stuff that we all miss... And captures time for a brief instant....
