I saw that this morning and got really excited... until I realized they took away most of the buttons in lieu of a touch screen. I don't see changing settings under water being very easy because of this, and frankly, I'd rather have the tactile feedback from true buttons so I don't have to pull the camera away from my face while shooting.

They had me going until that touch screen. I am still working with my G11 and don't see my talents requiring more at this point but this new camera would be tempting for the portable size and hopefully higher quality images. Course I would still be more interested in macro capabalities whatever the case.

Good to know I'm not the only one...

I think I'll continue to lust for the G11 for underwater use. Hell, I'm still shooting my D20 topside. A little upgrade never hurt anyone :)

I was looking forward to this too. I guess my hope is that Canon releases other EOS-M cameras that are more suited to underwater photography. Problems I see with this:

1) I LOVE the C1/C2 settings on my G10, 7D, and 5DMkII. Especially for underwater, having a "macro with flash" and "'wide' angle, no flash" setting is great. No such controls here and switching between Av/Tv may be too cumbersome with such limited control.
2) No flash built-in. Seriously, who is going to buy a P&S replacement without a built-in flash?!? So far all Canon's except 5D and 1D have a built-in flash of some sort. This means either a bulkier housing with room for the 90EX to trigger optically or bulkheads.

What I really wanted was a smaller-than-SLR camera that I could house, but on a mostly diving trip I could just bring the EOS M and an EF lens or two for topside. I don't see that this is that camera. Add G-level controls, and it would be. I can manage to upgrade from my G10 to a G12 nearly for free, so I think that's where I will be sitting for the next few years.

what is it with touch screens on cameras these days? Do people really like them? I prefer buttons, Underwater case with touch screen just don't go together. If you want to upgrade your G-series get a Canon G1X or go with a nice PEN or Panasonic. Also Canon's proprietary lenses now is like Sony, cant they go with the flow like Panasonic and Olympus you can use either brand lenses? I used to be big Canon fan but they lost me now I truly enjoy the PEN E-PL3 and its compact lenses.

The G1X has pretty poor macro performance.

I think they made the right choice with lenses. With the EF adapter, this new camera comes with a stable of dozens of lenses, some of them among the best in the world. I think we can expect to see about 10 specialized lenses for this system, but when the size/weight advantage disappears compared to an EF-S or EF lens, what's the point of producing a niche EF-M lens?

I agree. I went from a housed (Subal) N90 to a Canon G11 then 12. I bought a Fisheye FIX housing for it and used it once. I'm moving to the PEN E-PL3 and will be putting the Fisheye G11/12 housing up for sale as soon as I take a photo to post. I just prefer the ability to change lenses. What housing are you using for the PEN?

How much do you plan to sell your G12 housing for? PM me. I have the G12 but no housing yet. If the price is right, I may be interested.
