Smitty,
You're right, Canon's G9 case doesn't leave too much flat space for an optical sensor.
One other thing to note is that I've done my best to black out the camera's flash using electrical tape (on the inside and outside) which is to cut down on the back scatter. Of course, you'll want to leave a hole where your optical connector is going to be so that the light can get to it.
Good luck.

Good Advice on the Manual mode. I think I may have mine set to 2/3 power, but have never ever had a problem with poor battery life over 4 dives (I have both an extended battery and stock canon battery, both are fine). Have not yet had any issues with heat/fogging in the housing either... though I am always careful to pack my camera in a cool, air conditioned (thus low humidity) place.
If you search the web for NB-2LH you will find many that are 800mAh (Canon's is 720). You need to search a little harder to find 900mAh capacity, but here's just one example! ... Li-ion replacement battery for Canon NB-2LH - 900 mAh 7.4VWhat is the "extended battery" - aftermarket brand?
