What's the best way to get wide angle for the Canon g9 w/Ike housing?
Wet lenses?

I did some research on this back awhile for several P&S cameras. Both Ikelite and Patima have available a short port to accommodate various wet mount lenses. The Ikelite port is the 67mm threaded port. Most wet mount lenses thread on. I just custom made an Inon AD adapter for my Ikelite 67MM port so that I could use the Inon AD bayonet, mount lenses but unfortunately, even if I would, make another, the AD lenses will not work due to the smaller rear optical element with the G9.

Inon America used to have an excellent web page but some sort of dispute has shut them down. I think what you need is an Inon 100 Type II 67MM threaded lens with optional dome port. The lens is 325 and the dome port is about 400 dollars. The lens itself produces a image of about 100 degrees FOV, the optional dome port extends that to approximately 130 degrees. BTW, the standard lens/port produces a FOV of about 45 degrees underwater.

The AD adapter I made in my shop allows the use of the Inon 165 fsiheye for about 165 degree FOV but as I said, I don't think that lens is optically compatible with large barrel P&S cameras.

BTW, Ikelite and Epoque also make a 67MM threaded 100 degree lens but these will not accept the Inon dome port JFYI if tht is important to you. SFDiver shoots a G9 with the Inon 100 and Inon dome port, perhaps view his thread on Florida Wrecks.

Good luck.

Hi Rescue Diver,

As Nemrod pointed out, I use a G9 in a Patima aluminum housing and an Inon UWL-100 Lens (Inon UWL-100 Type 2 Wide Angle Conversion Lens [ino.159] - $329.00 : Reef Photo & Video!, The Underwater Photo Pros) with the Inon Semi-Fisheye Dome Unit (Inon Dome Lens Unit for UWL-100 [ino.165] - $389.00 : Reef Photo & Video!, The Underwater Photo Pros), and I've had very respectable results with it.

It is my understanding that this lens will fit the Ikelite housing, but I would check your prefered underwater photo shop or Ikelite to ensure that it fits well, because it may have some vignetting associated with its use on the Ikelite housing.

You can use the UWL-100 alone, and you will get excellent results. However, I chose to use the dome unit, because it gives me a wider underwater view angle of approximately 131.6 Degrees, and enhances my setup's ability to decrease the focussing distance and still keep wide objects withn the shot.

Here's a couple of examples of shots using the Inon lens and the dome unit, where I'm practically touching the subjecs with the end of the lens, yet still able to keep a large area within the shot - That's the advantage of these wide angle lenses!
