Hi Jrock,

Not sure if you've already purchased the Canon Housing for your G9, but if not, I would make sure that's the housing that will meet your current and future needs.

I've been doing my homework for quite some time and finally decided on the G9 w/ the Patima housing (http://reefphoto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2873). I'm not saying you should buy the Patima housing, because it's very expensive, but I like the fact that it will allow me to take it with me on my deep technical wreck dives.

However, if you would like to add wet lenses to your camera, which I suggest you do, because it makes all the difference in the world, I'm not sure you can do that with the Canon Housing. I currently use an Inon Mount Base and several Inon wet lenses with my Sony Camera and Sony Housing, but Inon does not make anything compatible with the Canon G9 Housing, because of the oval shape of it's port. Consequently, you may want to consider the Ikelite Housing (http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/5can_g7.html), because they have options with that housing that will allow you to add wet lenses.

With regard to your question about which strobe to add to your system, I personally love Inon strobes. I currently use dual Inon-240 Strobes, so my first instinct is to recommend Inon strobes. However, I'm not sure how you would connect them to the Canon Housing, for the reasons I previously indicated.

If you do ultimately go with the Ikelite Housing, then I would probably tell you to consider Ikelite strobes, because there are certain compatibility advantages.

My suggestion would be to give the folks down at Reef Photo (Reef Photo & Video!, The Underwater Photo Pros) a call. They are a speciality underwater photography store here in Ft. Lauderdale, and they also are one of the best known online specialists. If you give them a call, they would most certainly be able to give you some recommendations.

BTW, take a look at my Scubaboard Gallery if you want to see what you can do with wet lenses, as all the pictures within my gallery were taken with a simple Sony point & shoot camera with Inon wet lenses - I wouldn't dive without them! Furthermore, I also plan to use Inon wet lenses with my Patima Housing.

I have not yet bought the housing and i will take advantage of the link you posted thanks for the help:D

I have the G9 and have the Canono housing. I bought the Canon housing because of the price. If I'm going to send more money on housing, I'd buy a housing for my D80 instead. I almost bought the D2000 but because of budget reasons decided to use my old manual Ikelite D50. I plan to buy the D2000 next year. I've looked at the S&S but it doesn't match the capability of the G9. The G9 is almost an DSLR.

I have G9 with Canon housing and Inon D2000 type 3. I took the last 24 pictures in my galery using this camera. Not great pictures; but I think there's lot of improvement compared w/ my Oly C5000Z - sure.
G9 is great camera. I have no complain w/ the housing and quite happy with D2000; easy to use - so far always w/ sTTL or auto mode.

I apologize if im hijacking this thread but my questions might help the OP as well. Winsu, you have the setup that Im in the process of getting. I already have the camera (G9)and am thinking about buying the D2000 strobe. My question is on the sTTL. Can you use that in maunal mode? what about Av or TV, I know that the sTTL is supposed to work using preflashes but Ive never had my canon G9 do a preflash even in auto mode. I remember my Canon XTi use to emit 3 or 4 preflashes before taking a picture but the G9 never does that even in low light. How does the eTTL work with the D2000. Last question, what is the difference between just the D2000 and teh D2000 type 3. I think the strobe that Im buying is not the Tye3. I know the the z240 is a better newer strobe but I am getting the D2000 complete with a full setup and was thinking about using it with the G9 instead of buying a new strobe.
Thanks

No, the sttl does not work in manual mode. In manual mode; flash can only be set at min., medium and max. levcel.
It work well in Av and Tv - but the camera will choose the speed and aperture respectively which in some case not suitable (ex. for Av, 1/60)
Now, I learn, we'll have more control with full manual mode both the D2000 and G9 - in fact not difficult at all.
I don't have D2000 type 2, not quite sure the different between D2000 type 3; but somewhere in the net i read the type 3 has brighter focus light; and Inon recommend to use eneloop batery to minimze heat problem. May there's more advantage but I do not know.

Just my few cents... Because the G9 has TTL flash capability, it is worth getting a strobe which will work with it. Just to clarify: TTL (through the lens) means that the camera will quench the flash when it has received enough light.

I use G9 with an Ikelite housing and DS51 strobe. The housing connects to the camera's hot shoe and the strobe is connected via waterproof connection to the housing. This stops the camera's internal flash firing ('cos it knows a flash is connected), saving you having to mask it, or use a fiber optic slave.

The Ikelite DS51 works very well with the D9, and you can also force manual flash (6 power levels) if you feel the need. See IKELITE Underwater Systems for more info.

Ikelite stuff is not cheap, but is very robust; and as stated above, their housings allow wide angle lenses to be attached during a dive (though I have no wet lenses yet).

I actually own the setup described by the original poster: Canon G9 with Canon housing and dual YS27-DX strobes.

I've gotten some great images with it over the last 5 months and have had no issues synchronizing the strobes to the cameras using an optical cable. If you're on a tighter budget than Ikelite equipment allows for then this is a great rig.

BTW, Canon may be releaseing the G10 in the next couple months, though some leaked spec's don't look all that impressive... no CMOS sensor :-(

Regarding wet lenses, I recently used Brian Mayes modification (PM me if you want the link for instructions, or simply search for "DIY 67mm lens adapter" on wetpixel.com) to have the ability to add macro lenses (wide angle is NOT compatible, so don't waste your time). You can see some of the results of this setup here:

Good luck and happy hunting!
