Pretty keen to invest in a housing for my G9 as had some great snorkelling and diving in Vanuatu with nothing to show for it except (fantastic) memories.

Recommendations from you guys?

It's getting to be a mature product, so your choices are limited. Ikelite and Canon sell housings. The Ikelite is bigger and more expensive ($600) but supports wired TTL flash to Ikelite strobes. The Canon housing ($200) is smaller and you'll need optically triggered strobes.

Later if you want to add wide angle or macro lenses, the Ikelite and Canon housings both have those options. With Ikelite, you change the port to a short port and can use 67mm screw on lenses like the W20 and various closeup lenses like Inon 165-67. The Canon needs to have an adapter put on it to hold 67mm macro lenses; this is a do it yourself hack from a step ring. I think there is a Fantasea Bigeye wide lens for this housing too. So you do have these options, but they are a little complicated.

Thanks... how about the Patima housing? They seem extremely exy at around 1000

Be cautious about buying an expensive housing for your G9 at this stage. The G12 is out making your G9 more extinct.

If your G9 needs to be repaired for whatever reason Canon may tell you NO but will give you a credit towards an upgrade. Nice gesture but a G12 won't fit in your housing. Neither will a G11 if you found one.

Now what? Find a used G9? Sell your expensive G9 housing for ?

I have a G10 that needs repair when I get back to the USA next month. It still works but has a problem. Hopefully Canon will repair it. If not I have to look for a used G10 or eat/sell the Canon housing and start over. Worst scenario I am out $200. on my Canon housing, not $600 to $1000.

IMO if I was you I would buy the Canon housing if still available.

I suppose it all breaks down to the availability and significance of money.

Think about the kind of diving you expect to do with this camera. If the Canon housing is available that still might be the best way to go for a good learning system. It should be cheaper and has you covered for recreational dive depths. You may want to consider buying a good used G-9 as an insurance camera. Some strobes have both optical and TTL capability. One of those might be a good investment for future development.

I've just had to start using my insurance camera after a minor, yet fatal, flood.

I agree!
The result depends on the skills of the cameraman, not the housing... Whether the G9 is in an expensive $1k housing or a cheapo $100+ housing, the focusing could be "slow" sometimes... Well, memories are priceless, the equipment used to take them? Could be pricey or not... ;) Good luck with your purchase! I have seen a few sets of 2nd-hand G9 system (ikelite housings, strobes & accessories) being sold, u could consider them...
