Hello all!
I have just bought a UWL-165 macro lens for my G11. I have taken some good photos with it but I can't seem to understand how it all is supposed to work out. If you shoot without the lens you can get focus as close as 1 cm. What I expected from the lens was that I would be able to zoom in and still get the close focus but much more magnification. With the lens I have to zoom in about one third to get rid of vingretting and at this zoom I have to be like 8 cm from the subject in order to get any focus. Because I am further away from the subject than when not using the lens it feels like the subject is filling the frame in an equal amount but now I have 7cm more water between the camera and the subject. If I use full zoom I have to be around 20-30cm away to get focus. Am I doing anything wrong here?

Thanks in advance!
Niclas

Setup:
Canon G11
Fix G12
Inon S-2000
UWL-165M67

You need to work at full zoom and get as close as possible. With that lens the bottom of the canon lens should be at 15-16 cm so you will get more magnification will be able to lit properly the subject and you wont kill anything being on top of it at 1 cm

Thanks for the reply!
I guess I have the normal behavior then and just have to get used to it. I understand that 1cm is maybe not so workable in practice and not so kind to the subject but my point was that it is possible :) So for a subject like a pygmy I should use full zoom and shoot from 16cm then? If I buy another lens and stack them together what is the result I could expect and is it recommended to have the same model when stacking?

You can get another UCL165 and screw it on top the focus distance will halve, frankly this is not required with the G11 as at full zoom you are already at super macro with a single lens and with two it may become difficult to get focus (you are already experiencing that it seems)

I shoot with the S100 in a Fisheye Fix housing and 2 stacked 165 lenses. It depends on the subject. Sometimes I use lens but for super macro like nudibranchs, 2 is a must.
