Many Thanks.

For land use? or do you plan on housing it :eyebrow:

Haha.. Land and underwater both use,any advices?
I Will consider underwater housing too.

Jason - the 17-40mmL is a full frame EF lens - not EF-S. There are no L lenses for cropped sensors.

I picked the EF-S 17-55m f2.8 IS. It's a nice fast lens that's supposed to be very sharp as well. With the combination of the f2.8 and 3 stops IS you should be able to handhold this lens in pretty poor light and still get the shot.

My walkabout is the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 DC Macro, which is an excellent lens for it's price. I did need to let Sigma calibrate it though as it was backfocusing a bit out of the box. Now it's razor sharp.......

I guess it will depend on your budget and what you expect to be shooting topside and u/w...

u/w
Canon 60mm macro
Tokina 10-17mm Fisheye
If you're really like macro then the 100 macro

topside
28-105 f/4 L IS
17-40 f/4 L or 10-22 EFS if you really like landscape shooting

on a budget, try the Sigma 17-70 macro or even their 18-50 f/2.8 macro

And for housings, you'll want to wait for Aquatica to release their 40D housing soon since you'll need that 90m depth rating for all those tech rebreather dives you've been doing lately :mooner:

What do you guys thing about
Tamron Len SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] (Model A16)
Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 compact macro
Very good price ..cheap

Yup, agree, not many of the above:

UW:
Canon 60mm macro - the 50 is OK as is Sigma's version, but the 60's nicer :)
Canon 100mm macro
Sigma 17-70 - I wouldn't futz with the Tamron, I'm sure it's nice but the Sigma is the way to go
Canon 10-22 for wide

Topside:
Sigma 17-70
then whatever lens you want for what you will shoot.

I have the 17-55 2.8. It's a nice piece of glass. I would not buy it if I wasn't working with my camera - it's just too expensive and the Sigma 17-70 is a better value and a great piece of glass, too. The Sigma gets far more use when I'm not shooting portraits.

Just bought a 40D myself, but I opted for slightly different choice of lenses.

Canon 10-22
Canon 24-105L
Canon 70-300 IS

Just topside photos for now. I didn't really see the benefit of buying an EF-S lens in the 17-XX range since I was planning on buying the 10-22 as well. 24mm isn't super-wide on the the 40D (38mm), but it suits 95% of the subjects I want to shoot.
