My land based photo work has picked up to the point where I need a better camera, and I just discovered U/W photography in November. I was trying to find a camera package that would fill both needs and am leaning toward the Canon EOS 20D with Ikelite U/W housing. I like doing macro U/W (portrait work on land)
I would love to hear your opinions on this idea, before I plunk down a few grand to learn the hard way.

Oh man, that housing is tempting!

I've got the 20D and a couple of lenses (including the 10-22). If I only had another $2,500 laying around for a housing and strobe(s).....

I'm going to Roatan in March and that would be a great place to spend hours on end in the "front yard" shooting photos.

My wife would kill me though.

Ug!

Oh come on, it is only money! When you amortize it over the number of pictures you will take, it really isn't that expensive. :eyebrow: Anyway, I would love to hear how your Roatan trip goes. I have my first ever trip to Roatan booked in May.

Well, my wife was just getting over the $4,000 October Cozumel trip when I spent another $4,000 on the 20D (plus lenses, flash, etc). I already had a nice digital camera so that didn't sit well. Then I found a really good deal on Zodiac RIB that I couldn't pass up. Of course I needed some new electronics and odds and ends for that. Then my brother called and invited me to Costa Rica in February. Since I'm going to Roatan in March and I value my 25 year marriage I had to turn that trip down. Still, the damage was done. She's very conservative so I need to slow down on the spending.

I was looking at strobes for my little Sony P-9 for Roatan but decided it wasn't worth spending the money on that little P&S camera. Now I read this post on the 20D setup and start dreaming....

I could get away with it if I hid it from my wife but that's too sneaky. We're going back to Coz in October so I'll try to get a housing for that trip. But, I think Roatan would be a MUCH better place to use a camera.

Man, it's tempting....

Im presently using the nikon d 100 in an aquatica housing. I have a 12-24 with dome port for wide angle and a 60mm micro nikkor with macro port for of course macro photos. I use dual sea and sea 350 pro strobes with the guide controller and a light and motion 20 watt focus light. The d100 is a rugged workhorse and the lenses give incredible pictures.

I just purchased the Ikelite housing and strobe for my 20d and will be heading down to the West Indies in two weeks to break it in. I will let you know how it does when I get back if you are still interested in it.

It's an awesome camera let's hope the housing does it justice.

Can't wait for your report. I love my 20D and can't wait to get a housing for it. Are you getting the DS-125 strobe? What lens are you going to use? Do you have flood insurance? If so, how much is it?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm itchin' to get my underwater gear.

I am purchasing another camera and within my budget I am torn between the D-70 going into the Sea & Sea housing with strobes or the 20D going inside a Ike housing with strobes. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
