Did some underwater dives with this camera, and took some pictures topside without any problems. I don't think I ever flooded the camera, but now it won't turn on? Should I use my flood insurance?

Did you check the batteries?

Yep, maybe I should dunk it in the ocean, and then use the flood insurance?

Shaka have you tried replacing the memory card with another one?
Sometimes cameras and other electronic equipment can be quite fickle..

When you say died, do you mean that the camera will not turn on under any circumstances??
For example can you review pictures taken on the lcd screen in 'review' mode?

I replaced the CF card and the batteries. If you push the button to turn it on, nothing happens, it's dead.

Ok, that does sound a bit odd and seems to be well and truly dead.
But since it's an A85 I imagine that you've had it for quite a few years now?
Could be that wear and tear has finally taken a toll on your cam.

Using your flood insurance is of course an option probably the best one or you could send the camera back to the Canon repair center.
I'm guessing that your A85 is not under warranty anymore so you'd have to pay for the repairs.

Ever thought of just calling it a bust and getting a new camera and housing?? <Voice of temptation>

The A85 model is not all that old and you can still buy new ones today. Just an FYI

The Canon A85 was released in July 04. By digital PnS standards it's a dinosaur, and has been discontinued for some time even if you can still get them refurbished from some retailers.

Using flood insurance would depend upon the deductable. If you have a $100 deductable then IMO it's not worth is as you can get an A85 refurb for under $150.

I guess it also depends upon how honest you are :D

Unfortunately fixing these camera's is just not worth it. An estimate will run $20 minimum, and for anyone to open one up is going to cost more than the camera is worth.

There has been a lot of improvements since this camera was released, so I guess you will have to decide on if you want to just replace this model (however that happens) or look into something newer. Depending upon your insurance they will likely find you another used model (DEPP), or maybe just give you $$$ towards a new camera.

Good luck,

I had a similar problem with my A80, I took it to the local service agent and it turns out
it was a fuse costing a few cents. Cost $50 for them to tell me that tho.
