I sold my reefmaster after my last dive trip because it didn't have the close up capabilities I needed. I was considering the oly 5050 but I'm not so sure I want to spend so much cash on something I won't use that often. Please give me some feedback on the a70. It looks like the macro mode on it will cover my needs. Can I change modes from macro to normal in the middle of a dive? Most of the pics I take will be within probably 5 ft. Will the standard flash give me decent pics or will I need to have an external flash? Basically the onlly place I take UW pics is cozumel. So, based on what I've said, let me know the results. Shutter lag is my only real concern. Thanks in advance, Greg

I like the a70 alot. I took hundreds of pictures in cozumel, plus video, and I was very happy with it. yes, its easy to change from macro to normal during the dive. the standard flash is good for up close shots, especially in cozumel because the water is so clear. You can see my pictures with the a70 (internal flash) by following the link below; a few of my cozumel pictures are on the fifth page, the rest are in california (murkier water). Note - the hosting website compresses the pictures, so the original resolution is much better. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The A70 is wonderful and sounds just right for you. Do a search for it to find out lots more.

Yes, you can change from macro mode underwater. All settings are useable in the housing. IMHO I wouldn't bother. I leave mine on macro 99% of the time.

There are some A70 shots in my gallery and you can also check out LukeRob's gallery.

But do that search - you'll find lots of tips to get started with this system (the other Canon A series like the 85 & 95 are very similar so include those, too).

Also, are there newer models that I should be considering? I wouldn't mind spending about 4-500 bucks on the camera and housing. Thanks again, Greg

:) Check out the A95...it's the newest in the A series and several users here have just started with it. Depends on how many MP you want and what you want to spend. I never had any problems to 8x10 and some cropping with the A70 so must assume that the newer models are even better. I've seen 11x13 from the A20 - pro printed - and even that looks awesome.

I've just picked up an A40 ... not sure how much has changed.

The A40 in macro mode is good to about 5 inches ... any closer and it can't focus. That seems to give me a field of view about 10 inches wide (at 5-6 inches distance).

The A70 though, has enough resolution that you should be able to crop your shots later, and end up with a good shot that fills the frame with that christmas tree worm :)

Otherwise, I like this camera a LOT more than the Reefmaster it replaces.

I had the A70/WP-DC700 combo. I was 100% satisfied with both of them. There are newer and more advanced powershots out now, but the A70 can be had for next to nothing and is still a contender with the big boys.

If you do end up with an A70 and want the WP (WP-DC700) case for it I still have mine and am looking to get rid of it. Perfect condition, everything included even the original box. Email me if you're interested.

Hi,
I got the A-85 and am brand new to digital underwater photography. I just got back from Bonaire and two buddies also had new digitals. One had the reefmaster, one had a new Oly-5050 and I had the A-85. We are all beginners. The reefmaster had it's standard external strobe, the Oly (a MUCH more expensive camera) had the Oly external TTL strobe in the Oly housing and I had the A-85 with a Sea & Sea YS-90 strobe (a much better strobe). My photos came out much better than either of their's and I beleive the strobe was the biggest difference along with getting as close to the subjects as possible. Putting the A-85 in all manual mode, getting CLOSE, using Macro almost all the time and most important, having good bouyancy control so I could press the shutter down half way to prefocus and prepare the camera allowed me to minimize the shutter lag and get photos I am really happy with. If you are not rich and don't intend to go pro I think getting the Canon and spending the extra money on a really good external strobe will make you a happy person.
Good luck,
John
